Hi,

This is probably going to sound like a really dumb question, but I was wondering what exactly does it mean for a cell phone to be unlocked? Can any phone be unlocked and how does one go about doing this? What are the risks? Any explanations in laymen terms would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hi, allow me to explain..

An 'unlocked' phone can use any SIM card (from any service provider) in it.

A 'locked' phone (eg: many Reliance mobiles, or AT&T iPhones) can run only a particular SIM in it. i.e the phone is electronically locked by the service provider.

A locked phone can be unlocked, but this is illegal and hence the ways of unlocking can't be discussed in RxPG forums as it conflicts with the RxPG Terms Of Service.
