Vandi, I'm sorry for the late reply. During your 1st year you won't get much time to read (and even for ur basic chores like sleep /food,etc). U should try to learn and perform maximum number of procedures as that would give help u in the long run. Ideally u shud read about every case you manage. But the reality is far from ideal and u might end up just managing all types of cases and discharging them without reading or learning anything (like a spinal animal). Try to read Santosh kumar and Meherban Singh' clinical examination. Learn the clinical part of the subject (like the correct methods of physical examination, monitoring critical cases, observing normal newborns). Get hold of a good senior and learn the fine things of Pediatrics from him. Watch your seniors and colleagues work closely and try to incorporate their good qualities and learn from their mistakes (and of course yours too). Read management of all Pediatric & neonatal emergency conditions (many good books r available). Illingworth's development of the newborn is a book worth reading during your 1st neonatology posting. U shud have the 'harriet lane' and may be the Oxford handbook with u all the time..try to memorize all the pediatric drug doses (important ones first) in your initial 6 months..this is very important and would help u immensely...U may not read Nelson in the first year..From ur 2nd year when u have some time U can read from Nelson and other reference books depending on ur postings. U'll know what to read better when u'll be in your 2nd year. plus UR thesis will take a heavy toll and hamper your studies seriously (thats what happens in PGI). I do not know the solution to that. The key is to make a habit of reading something (may be even for 20 mins) everyday. that way UR brain won't rust and knowledge won't start declining after its nadir just before the entrance exam (which happened to me). Thats all for now. I'm feeling sleepy icon_smile.gif
