Why ITP?
Please justify all answers.
Its hard enough without having to be confused by each other.
ITP isn;t as common as trauma is it? especially in a &^%(*^& war zone like india.

In the past the commenct indication for splenectoy is trauma, but now no more we are going to preserve the liver and spleen by non operative managment and splnectomy in tauma became limited.Actually this non operative managment started in paediatric &now in adult also.

Quick Scroll indications for splenectomy 05.26.08 (4 months ago) #28

indication for splenectomy
Q. The commonest indication for splenectomy in India is:
a. Trauma
b. As part of redical gastrectomy for carcinoma stomach
c. Surgery of portal hypertension
d. Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura

Schwartz Principles of Surgery – 8th Edition
Chapter 33 SPLEEN
The most common indication for splenectomy is trauma to the spleen, whether iatrogenic or otherwise. Splenectomy for traumatic rupture is addressed in Chap. 6. Historically the most common indication for elective splenectomy has been staging for Hodgkin's disease. 22 More recent data suggest that ITP is now the most frequent indication for splenectomy in the elective setting. 3,22 In descending order of frequency, other indications include hereditary spherocytosis, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, and thrombotic
thrombocytopenic purpura.

From an Indian point of view one paper mentions the following:

Journal of Clinical Pathology - 2004 April; 57(4): 407–410 - An audit of splenectomies in a teaching hospital in North India. Are postsplenectomy guidelines being complied with? M Deodhar1 and N Kakkar2 - 1Department of Surgery, Christian Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana-141 008, Punjab , India
Results: Fifty six patients were studied. Trauma, both blunt and penetrating, was the most common reason for splenectomy
