HI can any psychiatrist PLEASE PLEASE guide me in follwoeing aspects--- all through my mbbs i liked Psychiatry alot and i've seen mental hospital at agra where also i found it quite good fr my aptitude. but 'm frm lucknow and here evrybdy says there's a social stigma attached with Psychiatry and most imp is many students left Psychiatry after taking it saying the practical is not as good as theory n all. so i took MS orthopaedics frm KGMU lucknow ,now i've got a rank(26) and if at all luck favours i may get Psychiatry thhere.can anybody please guide me what shud i do 'm in great confusion now.

Well Aditya, it seems the confusion is not between psy and orthopaedics (or some other branch for that matter), it is between what you want and what others think is good for you. You have to set your priorities. It applies for any branch I guess, but more so for Psychiatry . You have to live with whatever field you take now for the rest of your life.
To decide what you really want you should understand the scope and practical aspects of Psychiatry . From academic interest point of view, this branch requires little knowledge of what you learned till now. Its different from MBBS. Psychiatry is still in its infancy I believe. Only symptomatic treatment is given in majority of cases. Cure too, is very rare in psych. So you can't help a patient (and more importantly his/her family) beyond a certain level. It may be frustrating for some.
ppl who leave Psychiatry do so mostly because their aptitude is not suitable for the field and vice versa. Those who have interest in psych, do it no matter what their rank. You can see that in all-india composite list.
If you have interest in psy, then this field has alot to offer. Just understanding Psychiatry would give you immense satisfaction.
Social stigma is [bleep]-crap. As a Psychiatry aspirant that is the last thing you should care about.
You will be helping people who are the worst affected by sickness in the whole world as a psychiatrist. Why should it matter then what people think of you?
As far as sustainability part is concerned, it pays quite well to be a psychiatrist. Your patient will need you always. You can't do away with drugs. So do the math.
If you specifically want to know about psy in Agra, then I'm sorry I can't help you there. But from what I've heard, it is extremely good for psy. At least, its very famous!!
So think patiently about your choice. Listen to all but do what you think is right.
All the best.
