Hey check out my subject line. It is certainly not abusive. That was my EEG tracing when I tried to figure out a reason for my answer to the question : SENSITIVITY. Bruno, I can't think why. Nor can I rebutt your arguments. But I think that this is the answer.
I think I marked that for the test.
Cheers
Dr. Kay

| When that is positive, i order for a Fasting and Post Prandial Bllod Sugar......... |
i.e. before starting the actual treatment we want to confirm the diagonis which was suggested by the 1st test,
i.e. we want to know "How likely is it that the disease in question is actually present/absent?" (ie the predictive value of the test). |
The fact is WHILE DEALING WITH A SINGLE PATIENT,(CLINIC) the question of "how likely" does not arise.....that question arises while dealing with thousands in EPIDEMIOLOGY

| doesnt this means that for a rare disease the PPV will be falsely very low(as it wud give a high number of false positives). |
Exactly
| Quote: |
| i.e. this variable called PPV of a test, fluctuates not only with the type of test, but also with the setting/population on which it is applied. |
Absolutely
| Quote: |
| how useful can be a variable in a screening test which fluctuates with the type of disease & the type of population on which it is applied? |
Its usefullness in MASS SCREENING is because of the vary fact that it fluctuates
| Quote: |
if a test is 90% sensitive,
it remains 90% sensitive whether we apply this test to one person or 1000 persons,
whether the disease is rare in the particular population,
or,
whether we r applying the test in a hospital setting or general population.
wheras same doesnt holds true for PPV! |
This is the exact reason why we need an Indicator called PPV

Well....
This is what I think.......... and we are now certain, what is sensitivity and what is PPV......
Now we want to know the answer for this question (Neither me nor Akansha is answering the question........ we both - I feel - are beating round the bush)
This is because I think every point appears valid and we need to find which is more valid
SO, LET US CALL THE AUTHOR OF BIOSTASTICS BUSTER
Dr.Himanshu Tyagi....... Help Us ....SOS...... Save My Soul..... We are drowning
