Northern blot was named as "opposite" of "Southern Blot"-> which incidentally is named after Southern who developed the technique! Southern Blot is for DNA and Northern Blot is for RNA. (that is why it was named as opposite of Southern = Northern). It is used for mRNA.

Northern blots can be probed RNA, DNA or oligodeoxynucleotide probes.

There is no amplification involved...but of course.. amplified products can also be quantified or qualified using Northern Blot. Why not? Just that amplification is not part of the protocol...

pl read the table in lippincot 4 th ed. page 485.in northern blot test 1. rna sample is analysed 2. gel is used. 3.measures mrna amounts and sizes. pl donot get confused.
