Medical Schemes of Service Available in NHG

A position with the National Healthcare Group can fulfill your needs under the following schemes of service:

House Officers

House Officer Training is a mandatory component of medical training for all fresh medical graduates who have completed their basic medical degree. It is a period of clinical apprenticeship that aims to equip the new medical graduate with the basic skills of clinical practice. House Officer Training will last for 1 year and the House Officer will need to perform 3 postings, each posting lasting 4 months.

House Officer Training is provided by approved teaching hospitals in Singapore. Currently, within NHG, Alexandra Hospital (AH), National University Hospital (NUH) and Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) provide House Officer Training.
Eligibility Criteria
Fresh medical graduate who wishes to apply for House Officer position must satisfy either of the following conditions:

a. possess a MBBS degree from the National University of Singapore
OR
b. possess a basic medical degree awarded by an overseas medical school listed in the Schedule of the Medical Registration Act (MRA) of Singapore.






Medical Officers
Medical Officers are qualified doctors who are immediately responsible for the total management of patients in the wards. They are required to help House Officers in the clerking of cases and supervise/help House Officers in the performance of procedures.

Medical Officers undergo two 6-monthly rotations in a year through the NHG Preference-Driven Medical Officer Posting Exercise (MOPEX) where Medical Officers are empowered to choose their own postings to suit their own developmental needs and career interest.

Changeover dates for the postings are in May and November each year.

Upon appointment as Medical Officers, doctors who wish to be trained as specialists can apply to the Joint Committee for Specialist Training (JCST) to undergo Basic Specialist Training (BST) in one of the 14 Basic Specialties.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the Medical Officer position, applicants must satisfy the following conditions:

a. must have graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, National University of Singapore OR graduated from the Universities/Medical Schools listed under the Medical Registration Act (MRA).

b. must have completed houseman training satisfactorily

c. must be granted medical registration by the Singapore Medical Council (SMC)

d. must be granted an Employment Pass to work in Singapore
(applicable to non-Singaporean/ non- Singapore PR)






Medical Officer (Non-Traditional Source)

Medical Officers (NTS) are foreign doctors who possess basic medical degree awarded by an overseas medical school not listed in the Schedule of the Medical Registration Act (MRA) of Singapore. They are employed on a 2 years contract, subject to the successful medical registration with the Singapore Medical Council (SMC). The contract may be renewed upon expiry, subject to their work performance and manpower needs of the Company.


Eligibility Criteria


1. PRC and India
To be eligible for the Medical Officer position, applicants must satisfy the following conditions:
a. must possess a basic medical degree from a good University
b. preferably with a Master in a Clinical Specialty
c. have at least 6 years experience as a MO after housemanship in reputable hospitals

d. proficiency and a good command of English

e. must be granted Temporary Medical Registration by SMC

f. must be granted an Employment Pass to work in Singapore

2. Philippines
To be eligible for the Medical Officer position, applicants must satisfy the following conditions:
a. must possess a basic medical degree from a good University
b. be Board-eligible
c. must be granted Temporary Medical Registration by SMC

d. must be granted an Employment Pass to work in Singapore





Registrars

Registrars are experienced doctors with a recognised postgraduate qualification who have completed the Basic Specialist Training (BST). They are primarily responsible for the overall supervision and day-to-day running of the wards, including patient care. In addition, they will supervise and guide House Officers and Medical Officers.

There are 2 types of Registrars namely Advanced Specialist Training (AST) Registrar and Service Registrar.

AST Registrars are doctors who have completed BST and have been appointed by the Joint Committee for Specialist Training (JCST) as Advanced Specialist Trainee to undergo advanced specialist training in one of the 35 advanced specialties.

Service Registrars are doctors who have completed BST who possess a postgraduate degree recognised by the JCST for Advanced Specialist Training, but have been unsuccessful in their AST application or are waiting for a confirmed AST post. These doctors will have to be assessed to be ready and competent to perform the duties & responsibilities of a Registrar before being appointed as Service Registrar.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the Registrar position, applicants must satisfy the following conditions:
a. must possess a postgraduate medical degree that is recognised by JCST for entry into Advanced Specialist Training
b. must be granted medical registration by the Singapore Medical Council (SMC)

c. must be granted an Employment Pass to work in Singapore
(applicable to non-Singaporean/ non- Singapore PR)
d. must possess the relevant years of experience






Associate Consultant / Consultant

Associate Consultants and Consultants are Specialists who have completed Basic & Advanced Specialist Training. Besides being responsible for patient care, Consultants are senior doctors who are expected to provide leadership to all levels of staff, including teaching and training.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the Associate Consultant/Consultant position, applicants must satisfy the following conditions:
a. must be accredited as a Specialist by the Specialist Accreditation Board, Ministry of Health.
b. must be granted medical registration by the Singapore Medical Council (SMC)

c. must be granted an Employment Pass to work in Singapore (applicable to non-Singaporean/ non-Singapore PR)
d. must possess the relevant years of experience





Resident Physician

Resident Physicians are non-specialist doctors whose main role is to provide first-line clinical coverage in medical departments within NHG hospitals. The Resident Physician Scheme is created to provide an alternative and attractive career track for doctors who do not aspire to be specialists but wishes to remain practicing in a hospital setting.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the Resident Physician position, applicants must satisfy the following conditions:
a. granted Full/Conditional medical registration by the Singapore Medical Council (SMC)
b. possess at least 5 years of Medical Officer experience
c. must be granted an Employment Pass to work in Singapore (applicable to non-Singaporean/ non-Singapore PR)





Family Doctor / Family Physician

Family Doctors and Family Physicians are doctors pursuing a general practitioner career within the primary healthcare environment i.e. NHG Polyclinics

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the Family Doctor/Family Physician position, applicants must satisfy the following conditions:
a. granted Full/Conditional medical registration by the Singapore Medical Council (SMC)
b. possess at least 3 years (for Family Physician) or 5 years (for Family Doctor) of Medical Officer experience
c. obtained a Master of Medicine (Family Medicine)
(applicable to doctors applying to be Family Physicians only)
d. must be granted an Employment Pass to work in Singapore
(applicable to non-Singaporean/ non-Singapore PR)
e. completed MO bond (applicable to local graduates from National University of Singapore applying to be Family Doctors only)





Dental Associate

Dental Associates are non-specialist dental surgeons providing dental services within NHG hospitals/polyclinics. The career progression for dental surgeons on the Dental Associate Track is as follows:


Fresh Dental Graduate Dental Officer (4 years) Dental Associate

Senior Dental Associate Principal Dental Associate


Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the Dental Associate position, applicants must satisfy the following conditions:
a. must have a minimum of 4 years of clinical experience as Dental Officer
b. must have completed undergraduate dental training bond (for local graduates from the National University of Singapore
c. must have a basic dental degree that is registrable with the Singapore Dental Council (SDC)
d. must be granted an Employment Pass to work in Singapore (applicable to non-Singaporean/ non-Singapore PR)

Temporary Registration

Allows:

a foreign-trained doctor to be attached for a short-term period at a public hospital/ institution in Singapore for the purpose of teaching, research or postgraduate study in medicine under an approved training scheme; or
a foreign-trained visiting expert to operate, conduct demonstration workshops and give lectures, etc, usually for a very short-term period; or
a foreign-trained doctor to be employed by a hospital/ institution for service purposes for a specified period and in a specified medical capacity. These doctors would otherwise not be entitled to medical registration.
Eligibility requirements:

must be a registered medical practitioner in the country where the doctor is currently working; and
hold a certificate of experience or equivalent as proof of satisfactory completion of housemanship; and
who is a graduate from any overseas medical school who demonstrates the ability to fulfill the purpose for which registration is granted (applicable to overseas trainees or research fellows); or who possesses medical knowledge, experience and skill which the Medical Council consider to be of international standing (applicable to visiting experts); or
who possesses qualifications which are adequate for the purposes of registration (applicable to those employed to provide short-term service in disciplines which are short of doctors).
Additional Requirements for Doctors Applying for Temporary Medical Registration:

The applicant

Must have an offer of employment or training with an approved healthcare institution;
Must have completed 1 year of housemanship or internship training overseas satisfactorily;
Must be current and actively practising overseas;
Must be of good standing i.e. doctor is not subject of any disciplinary proceedings or investigation;
From 1 Aug 2005, foreign-trained doctors from medical schools where the medium of instruction is not English will be required to pass an English proficiency test, e.g. International English Language Testing System (IELTS ) test [must achieve band score of 7] or the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL ) [must achieve 250 marks for computer based test or 600 marks for paper based test or 100 marks for internet based test] or Occupational English Test (OET) [must achieve grade B].
From 1 Aug 2005, the doctor must have at least 3 years' working experience as a medical officer or a postgraduate qualification from their own country to ensure that they have sufficient experience.

The temporary registrant will be required to apply for a practising certificate before he can commence practice at the approved place of practice.

I am a Singapore PR. My sister is an MBBS from India. She wants to apply for a Medical officer post here so that later she can apply for her PG.
