Dear bright,
You want your future best, both on job and money counts....money will follow if you are able to do big jobs in this area...and to get the big cream jobs, you have to be really good in terms of technical excellence as well as tactical fineness dealing with your surrounding...remember this is almost like battle field where you will need diplomatic acumen to push up your agenda (at least at the upper level).....so to achieve those much needed traits, first thing necessary is getting academic qualifications....and every higher degree exposes somebody to a wider range of knowledge and training, tactics.....master better than diploma, PhD better than Master....foreign degree (US, UK, Netherlands,Belgium, Australia , Sweden etc) better than the local qualification......And on the simplistic note, for a better job, the employers simply may not consider ie. shortlist someone with smaller qualification..that straightway precludes one's progress up the career ladder......Having said that, I dont dismiss the prospect of a diploma, but then you will need much longer time (to gather experience slowly) to earn a respectable position/job, and this is unlikely to get you an apex job/position anyway.

Hope this helps.

Dear bright,

Your statement, 'To do best in the field'...actually greatly magnifies your goals, which needs much more than just reading some "must read" books. Reading books is obviously necessary. Studying the course, you should read books on epidemiology, statistics, research methods, health policy, systems..etc..(you can refer to my reading list) and I suggest to read a number of books, as no book can explain satisfactorily all the necessary topics ( I needed to study 3 books and other course materials and follow professor's lectures on epidemiology to have basic understanding). Well,...reading good books bring your degree and more importantly helps buid your foundation...But its just the beginning...from then on you will develop through hands on experience of work in operation, research..policy, advocacy..experiencing all these over the years to come may be the launching pad to earn top glories in the field. This must be a challenging journey, you have to be patient.

Bright,

Re 'your love for the field goes deeper'....yes, reading good books shall enrich your knowledge, technical soundness on the public health related problems, diagnosis, solutions....you will feel enthusiatic (feeling like..'Now I can jump and dug into this field")...this love and enthusiasm can be sustained and intensified, if you get the jobs which allow you to perform the works and you can apply your technical knowledge you acquired.....Your success in accomplishing these befitting jobs again depends on availablility of the jobs (which i believe still not bad in the Subcontinent), and your prowess in technical (your technical understanding) and tactical aspects related to work environment (colleagues, professional networks etc)....your inherent capability to liaise with people and good academic training may enhance these skills.

Marriage between your knowledge and what you do ( i.e. application of knowledge) is the key for sustained love and dedication to the field...and this again should be a living journey...which means you are not stagnant...over time you are getting bigger in experience and having due incentives.

Hope this helps
