Orkut, like the rest of the internet is a pretty dangerous place, unless proper precautions are taken. recently, in our college some disgruntled fellow created an offensive profile and included very indecent references to me, my girlfriend and few of our friends as well.
It was only after this episode that i realised that you can block people other than your friends from sending you scraps or viewing your photos and scrapbook. In this respect, Facebook is safer, and most of the people i know, specially the girls are switching over to Facebook.
Orkut communities are another big scam. They will have 50.000 members but what you get inside is just all sort of crap in the world- from home jobs to shares to porn.
I request people to change their settings in orkut and allow only friends(not even friends of friends) to view scraps and photos.[/b]

I agree with the previous post that orkut can be a serious time-waster, if it is used indiscriminately.

However, I believe that apart from networking, orkut can also be a good source of information. I guess the most important part is to choose the right communities to join. Yes, there is a slew of bogus and inane communities with plenty of useless stuff. But for every 10 such communities, there's one that provides really good information-sometimes stuff you may not find even on rxpg. Or atleast it gives access to people who have such information.

I believe it takes a fair amount of searching and following up communities for some duration to narrow down on the really useful ones. But its worth the pain in the end.

As far as security issues go, its best not to reveal one's identity (esp through photos) notwithstanding any amount of security that is on offer.

I found most of my school mates that I had lost contact back using ORKUT. It has a lot of deficiencies and issues. But this can occur anywhere! Not meaning to be offensive or critical, but I do know and read threads even in RxPG where some users offend others .. in public or private even in here! Of course it is more efficient in here ... with about half a million users here! But there... it is the sheer magnitude of the user population that makes things easier for problem mongers.

Whether it is here or anywhere else, most just prefer to 'suffer' silently when subjected to some abuse or if they feel vulnerable when it occurs online.

If one were to report the same, the user can be banned but he could very well come back with another ID just to make new victims or victimise old ones in new ways! Banning IP might actually not catch this user alone. Most of Indian users have dynamic IP and another genuine user might be the one who would be banned!

So it is IMPORTANT that one should NOT have false sense of security because this is RxPG or a complete sense of insecurity just because it is ORKUT! I DO NOT COMPARE RxPG with ORKUT. Orkut is definitely larger and far far more dangerous in all aspects than RxPG when it comes to problem makers! But...

Anywhere, anytime in real life or online, orkut or otherwise, being sensible about what we reveal and to whom remains very important. Wrong information trusted with the wrong person will turn to be the most difficult mistake to correct!
