Hi herrdoktor2
All the information regarding return of service are available at the following website
Only RxPG members can see links here! Register or Sign In!

The length depends on the province. For Atlantic provinces it is same as the duration of residency training. For Ontario it is 5 years.

I donot consider this slavery. Its just that there are some restrictions to the practice location, thats it. Most people adjust well. In fact the under serviced areas are the ones where they offer a lot of incentives and hence you may end up actually earning more than you would had expected.

Hope this helps
GL!

If you take a look to the statistics in the CARMs website and compare the number of IMGs who applied to the number of IMGs who are accepted every year you can figure out that the whole system is unfair .
beside the number of years of ROS that IMGs should serve in the underservised areas...being in a residency position shouldnt give us the right to say that the system is fair and at the same time we see hundreds of qualified IMGs that apply every year with no chance...

Regarding fairness...

It is not really the Canadian's fault that there is so many IMGs out there. If less of us would try to get here, it would be a lot easier for those who do try. It's just a question of supply and demand.

The system is way too complicated with the provincial exams on top of the MCCs that is where I think they should make things better for IMGs.

Ameer, thank you for your reply. I already looked up the carms homepage, there it says "check the Ontario RoS" page. On that page then, there is a lot of information, except on the length. I could find only the following:
"3) How long is my return-of-service commitment? Please review your return of service agreement, which specifically identifies the length of your commitment."

So hard to get solid information!!!!

I also read that document several times, but there is nothing regarding the exact length of ros. It is stated that the length will be wriiten in the contract by each program.
I understood that it will depend on the program. But doctor Ameer is saying that it is always 5 years, so why didn't they simply write that in the document ?????!!!!

Newfoundland, Nova Scotia--> depends on the duration of residency training, plz check
"The RoS contract that will be employed has been developed jointly by the four Atlantic Provinces and incorporates a length of return service equal to the number of years the physician spent in his/her residency training program (see draft RoS contract:
Only RxPG members can see links here! Register or Sign In!
)"

Ontario- 5 years
"All IMGs will be required to sign a return of service contract with the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care of the Province of Ontario, in the specialty (including Family Medicine) to which they have completed residency training.
Information about the Return of Service requirement can be found in the following document (updated Dec. 18, 2007): Ontario RoS"

Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Québec - dunno

I think all the information are available at the provincial ministry of health website..... MOHLTC is for Ontario, just do some research through google, etc......
Hope this helps
