Infact USCE has always been a confusing issue for me too.
USCE Clerkship from Harvard.
DigiDoc's View :- LOR of Harvard would be too good and Tag would matter.
Dipsite's View :- USCE should be obtained from a place which should give an Interview call, Harvard won't give an Interview Call.

My friends who had gone for clerkship Say Observership has no value, now this is something depressing and annoying for those who didn't manage to get it. If they are right then those with Observership wouldn't have got Interview calls. I agree that hands-on Clinical Experience has More value than Observership but does this mean that those who doNOT possess hands-on Clinical Experience are out of Race??

My Conclusion :- Everyone is busy in flaunting his/her achievements like Clerkship, Double-99 etcetera etcetera. Funda is :- If you have a little bit of it, then just flaunt it !!

Dear dipsite, ask someone with a low 80s score, what happened when he applied to good universities for an O'ship. How many of such candidates were offered an O'ship??? Very few, thats because credentials do matter. Of course its not like residency, so they can be bypassed sometimes with applying early, contacts and persistence.
Now just to put your query to rest, just read this reply from a big university program to me regarding O'ship. I got similar replies from many Universities.

Now, the first come first serve funda comes into play because there are hundreds of applicants at times for these O'ships, so there are plenty with decent credentials, so who comes first gets it. This applies less when contacts are at work or for small programs.

....ICMR STS has little value. Now-a-days Medics are working on International Publications.
You are Interested In Paediatrics...??!!!
Paediatrics people have low salaries and Litigations seem to be more against Paedia people. |
Dipsite, work on your spellings buddy. These British spellings are going to get you nowhere in US! 
Its all about personal interest. Every branch of medicine is just great and I think one should work in the one that he/she likes the most, even if there are certain pitfalls. (Actually every specialty has some)
About STS i can only say that don't compare with people with international publications. Such people are still <5% of IMGs. Any additional degree does look out on your application because it separates you from others who don't have it, specially if it doesn't have any disadvantage attached to it. Like an PG in home country looks good but it makes you an old graduate due to intervening 4-5 years, usually offsetting the benefit.

For the first time in the history of RxPG we both agree!!! Its a great day today friends.. Celebrate!!! LOLzz 
You have said the absolutely correct thing. I've come across two people who did an elective from Harvard. Both did not get calls from Harvard inspite of good scores. One of them has only about 7 calls from average programs, which is not exceptional. Harvard tag does matter but only if your LOR from there is very strong. That is pretty hard, because maybe Harvard guys are very hard to please. If they would've been strong they would certainly have got calls from Harvard itself because every program values strong recos from its own faculty.
My view... its good if you can do something from Harvard but don't expect it to do wonders for you. I know friends who did MPH from Harvard School of Public Health and got 1-3 LORs from Harvard profs while working for them as RA etc, still weren't called from Harvard. Their IV call profile was not drastically different from others with similar profile otherwise.

I've always felt that extreme views are useless. And anybody giving you an extreme view is either dumb or doesn't know American system at all. Certainly hands on >> O'ships but that doesn't make O'ships useless. In fact i've interviewed at a few big names where many others had clerkships and otherwise similar or better profiles. So O'ships did work for me in bringing me at par with them, and so do for many others.
They are not right also because people with O'ship do get calls and sometimes very good calls.

Harvard faculty is notorious for writing Average  or sometimes Bad LORs!!

I havn't come across anyone who has got below 90 past 6 months. khi!! khi!!

Well, my friends who had knowledge as well as planning for USMLE
right from First Year of their Medical School have 1-2 International Publications . 5% data may be correct.

Hi AshB and Dipsite
i am trying to get an observership/externship
i am really interested in doing one from Emory University in decatur/atlanta Georgia and Emory university is mentioned on your list of established observership programs
however i read on their site that they dont offer observerships/externships...did they recently stop offering obships or did they just do that to fend off large volumes of people applying for obships there...
i heard from someone that they do offer obships sometimes even though they state on their site that they dont...please confirm that for me
also i wanted to know how to go about getting malpractice insurance in case you wnna do an externship
and one last thing...do gaps in your resume make a big difference in trying to get an Oship? cos i have a gap of about 9 months after my internship in which i gave my step 1 and prepared for Ck and CS which i will give very soon
will a score of 96 on step1 help me get some Oships even tho i know everyone nowadays gets 90+ on their steps?
hope i didnt ask too many questions

hi!im a student in third year mbbs student..from bj medical college,pune,Maharashtra
...i wil finish my final year of mbbs by next december.instead of doing internship in india,i wish to do externship in usa?is that possible?will i get my degree without doing internship here?which instituutes in usa provide externships?how much in advance do i need to apply for it?
please help me
