Anatomical Pathology
A raised JVP, elevated further in inspiration, with deep x and y descents is seen in constrictive pericarditis and cardiac tamponade.

Large a waves
are seen in pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary stenosis and sometimes in LVH.
Large systolic v waves
are seen in tricuspid regurgitation, while a slow v descent indicates tricuspid stenosis.
Conduction block and dysrhythmias
a waves are absent in atrial fibrillation. Cannon waves – giant a waves with abrupt fall – occur when the atrium conducts against a closed tricuspid valve: complete heart block, single chamber (ventricular) pacemaker; atrial flutter with block; AV nodal rhythms; ventricular rhythms.
