OPHTHATMOLOGY DEPT. AT: MEDICAL COLLEGE,CALCUTTA

PATIENTS' INFLOW: This is the Regional Institute Of Ophthalmology .The ophthalmolgy dept.of this college was upgraded to regional institute status years back.There were similar moves in every region of country.and among thsoe RIOs few have lived upto the mark. Being an RIO,this institute receives patients referred from all parts of northern and north east India.Patients are referred here from eastern UP,Bihar ,Orrisa,North eastern states apart from various parts of West Benagl.There is no dearth of complicated cases which are managed only here in this part of country.Above that ususal patients(like cataract etc) are also aplenty here.

OPERATION THEATRES: There are six OT rooms,one LASER room, two minor OTs.Apart from them there are special clinics for different diseases,like retina,squint,glaucoma,cornea clinics.

OPERATIONS DONE: Most units conduct catarct surgery by Phaco apart from usual ECCE.Other commonly done surgeries include retinal reattachment surgery,vitrectomy,glaucoma surgeries,keratoplasty

SCOPE OF GETTING SURGERIES IN THE COURSE DURATION: 1st year PG students become versed with most of the surgeries done here.It depends upon different units,but normally they are allowed to do cataract surgery by the end of first year.No time limit,if one is prompt enough then he can do phaco too by the same time. panretinal photocoagulation,flourescin angiography,DCR,DCT,pterigium,chalazion are done by first year students only.There after upto which level one goes depends upon his/her capability.

ACADEMICS: Regular case presentations and seminars begin right after one month of starting the course.There are various update courses which are conducted time to time.You are always kept on your toes by the unit heads!There is a rich liabrery of ophthal books.In OTs there are modern op.microscopes with siede lenses so training in operative skill is also very effective.

TEACHERS: THE BEST teachers of the state are here! Different unit heads are experts in different fields.If ur unit head is an expert of retinal surgeries,then there will be separate retina clinic apart from regular OPD in your unit,where u can learn.There is time bound rotation of units;you will be sent to work in all the units in 3 or 2 years time so u have the scope of learning under experts in different fields.

INSTRUMENTS IN DEPT: There is no dearth of operating microscopes. Automated perimetry,biopmetry,slit lamps,phaco machine,DFA, Laser machines,indirect ophthalmoscopes are present here in numbers.

LABORATORY BACKUP: There is a patho and biochem lab attached with the RIO.These labs are well equipped with staffs and instruments.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES(IF ANY): On your entry at RIO,u have a brief introduction session with the teachers.Then few weeks latter RIO organises a fairwell for the passing batch.There first year performs different cultural programmes.

HOSTEL FACILITY: Hostel at Medical College is available to those who are in real need of it. There are different hostels;not all are in good condition;but you can do with them!

HISTORY-- It was started in 2004.there are two seats in total,one for AIPG and one for state. so first batch has not passed out yet. MS orthopaedics at burdwan medical college is in "P" category at present. it means that it is permitted to run that course and recognition is expected in future. this course has been started recently and not even a sigle batch of MS have passed out, so it is bound to remain in "P" category. seeing the dept.and work there u can presume that it will be recognised fully by the tim first batch passes out.till then there is no harm in doin MS orthopaedics . here as it already "P" permitted which is a step towards full recognition whnever a new course is started in a new college.

DEPARTMENT--- orthopaedics dept.here is housed in an ancient building built by the Late maharaja of Burdwan. but..dont go by when i say that its an ancient building! the orthopaedics OT,is a master piece,an state of art facility! all credit goes to dr.m.m.roy who had concieved the plan of starting MS here. he had rennovated the OT during his tenure. there are two OT rooms with two beds in each.

SURGERIES DONE--- As far as i know(i passed out from burdwan medical college), almost all orthopedic surgeries are done in this college.surprised??!! dont be. let me tell u that there is news that shortly DNB orthopaedics will also starting here.now u can guess that those NBE ppl just dont start DNB course in not so good institute.

SCOPE OF WORK-- To be precise and brief; an MS orthopaedics 1st yr trainee is made ES of the emergency OT regularly. he has ample of freedom to practice his skill and at the same time there is enough guidence available from the Visiting Surgeons incharge of the unit. its tha case load that is the reason behind it. Burdwan caters patients from a very large area arnd it(its 90kms from calcutta),so the case load is so much that MS trainee has to do ES duties in units other than his too.

LIFE AT BURDWAN--- Nothing much to be accepted from it! first plus points,burdawn is on the main rail route from delhi to calcutta.its penultimate stop for a train heading to howrah from delhi. so no problem in getting in and out of here. it has parks,narrow roads,good markets,not so good bars,nice resturents,poor cinema halls. hostel facility is satisfactory. rickshaw is common mode of conveyence in burdwan. life in burdwan is slow. but then again if u have time(which u wont have) doing MS orthopaedics here,u can simply head to calcutta by express(1.5hours)/local(2.5hours) trains and enjoy life in there.

SUMMERY-- Its a good place for doing MS orthopaedics

HISTORY--- MD Anaesthesia was started few years back only in this college

DEPARTMENT--- Anaesthesia dept.is housed in the huge outdoor complex in the hospital.but dept.itself is not that big,it occupies half of one of the floors. this dept.has adequate teaching staff and academics is good enough. recently the dept.has been proactive in organisisng seminars and symposia regularly which was not the scene few yrs back.

SCOPE OF WORK--- There is ample! i have seen PGTs being made incharges of different emergency OTs from 1st yr only. this hospital is over burdened by the patients,so are the OTs and so the Anaesthesia PGTs have to work a lot;for their good only. no body is there to stop u from doing anything.do what u can. if u can master spinal an.in a few days of yr 1st yr.then u can do that as many time as u can.u have to do the duties very strictly. and the teachers of dept.are pretty sincere regarding academics these days,which wasnt a scene just few yrs back.

SUMMERY--- MD Anaesthesia at burdawn medical college;worth doing. it is not something great,but it will make u a competent anaesthesist in market in three years time.
