i think pg in nepal is not a good idea becos one of my friend told me that the biggest hurdle is language. and there is definitely some anti indian sentiment looming at large

i think language would be a hurdle if u go to any natively non-hindi speaking state in India too.
besides, nepali is not so difficult...its basically a devnagri origin language, and resembles hindi a lot.its very similar to a mixture of some sanskrit words, a bit of bengali, and maithili etc.
about the anti indian sentiment, i'm a graduate from nepal, i can tell u... it definitely exists but its not that big an issue to dissuade you from doing PG there!

This reply is directed to everyone turning their world upside down debating on the pro's and cons of PG in Nepal.Firstly coming to the aniti indian feeling:-It does exist, but compared to what indians face in australia,UK,russia...it is really embryonic. Common guys get a life....curse our godforsaken ancestors for the situation...you dont expect to be offered a bouquet, after our great baniya population visited nepal and called them (and treated as well) as darwaans and zamadars for decades...still even after the humiliation of the poor nepali ppl, they are helpful, and dont openly go "currybashing" until and unless you screw up things beyond control...or do some medical procedure horribly wrong and insane to the limit which can land u in a jail. You can easily get away by rupturing the urethra of a BPH patient by trying to put in a foleys....or taking 20 attempts to insert the cannula in the most superficial vein you can ever get in your life.It is absolutely safe to walk alone at 2 o clock (in any cities apart from Kathmandu)...and most likely the few wandering drunkards or dopers will not even give you a look.Nepal survival Tip no.1:-Learn the language fast.It is a very easy language to learn..i am a Bengali from Calcutta...and today i can boast of my Nepali skills to such an extent that i am ready to bet 10000 rupees if anybody can prove i am not a Nepali.(this is not an overstatement, and it holds good for many Indians in Nepal)
Debate number 2:-Standard of education....ok,it is definitely not comparable to AIIMS (there is no world class medical institutes in Nepal, including the private hospitals)...but definitely the worst medical college (with PG) is at par with an average to marginally below average Indian college offering PG.The surgery residents in my college get to do all common operations..and hold on....the residents till they pass, perform at least 30 TURP,lap, burr holes etc...does it sound too bad??
MCI recognition:-Who cares??unless you want to join a govt hospital, start your career with 25,000 and end at 45,000??MCI recognises the BASIC MEDICAL DEGREE.you get registered with the MCI and subsequently your state medical council as an MBBS doctor....MS,Mch,DNB,FRCS all are but jewels you wear... don't get much worked up by it...MANY of my seniors have done MS/MD from Nepal and are VERY WELL settled in India, well established and earning more than 1 lac a month...and i believe at the end of the day.....IT MATTERS.On the other hand i have seen guys doing MBBS from the best institute of Calcutta and working as an MO under my seniors, who are now consultants.
So to sum up things after this loooong post.....
Nepal is definitely the Best place to PG for an Indian outside India.if you can pick up the language fast,it'll be the icing on the cake.(get the basic psychology right, nepaleese ppl are still very simple and honest, and the love to hear a foreigner speaking nepali)....so guys all i want to say is i have spent great 5 years in Nepal...no regrets at all...i am proud of the knowledge and clinical exposure i had,and i am sincerely working on my way to come back to nepal for another 3 years for my PG.any questions...please feel free to ask...so long

Dear Agniva, that was really an eye opener. I feel u have very aptly replied. We also humiliate the Nepalis by calling them as BAHADURS(as if they are born gatekeepers). Thankful they don't bash up the Indians there. Besides, we are so much similar culturally,so what's the fuss bout the country n its people. Now, coming to the main point, Agniva i browsed the BPKIHS website. This year's PG entrance and counselling is over. Anyway, i will be appearing next year. Can you please tell me whats the monthly stipend and whether the Foreign category guys get it or nt? How much is the level of competition for the seats in foreign category? Hope i m not troubling you. Waitin 4 ur reply.

Dear Josh,
There lies few pitfalls for BPKIHS.Note the fact that apart from few departments like orthopaedics, anaesthesia,ENT (and maybe 1 or 2 more)the PG is not recognised my the MCI,yet you end up paying A LOT of money.for example,a senior of mine did MS ophthalmology from BPKIHS by paying 26 lacs, maybe his bargaining skills are bad,but honestly, the standard of PG education in Nepal is ALMOST same everywhere. So the question lies do you want to spend an extra 10 lacs for receiving ALMOST same competency?? talking about salary,it is just an eyewash.some institutes will offer you a seat for just 7-8 lacs(after bargain) with a monthly stipend of Rs.7000 Nepali =Rs.4400 Indian, some institutes will offer you a PG for 10 lacs with a monthly salary of 10,000 Nepali, and some will offer stipend of Rs.10,000 Indian and they will charge 15,lac for the seat.It all depends on how you convince the director and principal of the institute. There is also another option which is preferred by the Indians. This is called a contract based PG.By this you sign a bond to serve the institute for 2 years after PG as a consultant. You get paid Rs.45,000Indian (approx) as a post PG consultant, and if you avail this option your donations are greatly reduced,For example you can get into MS ortho for 7-8 lacs. But now you may ask what's the point staying in Nepal for 2 yrs after PG?well....the answer is simple...you get to do a lot of work, operations, handle challenging cases independently, you get well paid (according to the Nepali standards, you are highly paid)...as 5000 rupess Indian is good enough for a month, you get 40K,plus the experience...and also to add,any docs with a PG from abroad, when joining an indian hospital, get appointed as senior medical officer,or a s a senior RMO,they need at least 2 years post PG experiences to become a consultant....so you see its a win win situation for you...get your PG done real cheap, earn good money after PG and once you serve 2 years, you return to india as a consultant.
Oops I just realised,I have already written a long post without addressing your queries clearly. So to clear things up...YES foreign doctors do get stipend..it depends how much but they get atleast 10,000 Indian rupees per month...I will verify this and let you know shortly. It is difficult to get the seats..The competition is high and seats are almost booked under the table months before the examination...so I would suggest you to visit the Deans office and make some arrangements for yourself. In case you have 2 years Post MBBS work experience, you can apply for Bir Hospital Kathmandu..it is really good....please feel free to ask for any further assistance.best of luck.

agniva has given u good info about PG in nepal in his previous posts.
i can tell u more about BPKIHS (I graduated from there and have many friends doing/done their PG there)...
The exam is held only once an year in June.
The branches recognised by MCI are currently ortho, surgery, paeds (ENT at IOM is MCI recognised, not at BPKIHS)
They have a very fair PG entrance, and the fees is fixed for each category every year (was 5lakh/yr last yr and around 11lakh/yr this yr)
There is no system for fixing seats under the table or bargaining for fees at BPKIHS.
The current salary they are paying to PGs (including Indians) is 19k NRS (comes to around 13-14k INR)
There is no bond/contract for Indians at BPKIHS.
Most PGs are doing ok back in India, working mostly in private sector.

hello,
I completely agree with neemhakeem on the point that seats in BPKIHS cant be fixed under the table,Many thanks for the tip.It is noteworthy that,It is a government institution and things are more transparent.but to quote an associate of mine, who is a consultant in the department of ortho, recently commented over a drink that there are students who paid 11 lacs a year, and also there are students who paid 6 lacs a year...so the confusion continues.Regarding fixing seats, and signing the bond....you can try your luck at Pokhara manipal, kathmandu medical college,Bharatpur medical college, Kathmandu university medical college...that is all other institutes except BKHIHS and IOM.Let me make one thing very clear....YOU CAN BUY ANY AND EVERYTHING IN NEPAL.a suitcase full of money is good enough to get you anything in Nepal.people don't know about it because they don't want to know about it,as they believe it involves substantial risk.
Anybody interested in doing PG in Nepal, with no background of Nepali language,or if they did MBBS from India my suggestion will be... don't go for IOM or BKIHS.its no point getting screwed upside down for trivial issues, being treated as second grade citizens, when you don't deserve that. Some might not agree with me,but the situation has worsened since few years,as a bunch of madhesi and young Nepali consultants have joined, who believe they are god..the Nepali students are their disciples and the Indians are a bunch who belong to the armpit of the universe.and since BPKIHS and IOM are government institutes, obviously no action is taken, and their actions are unfortunately supported in an indirect way. However,in the private institutes, most of them have Indian management,70% professors are Indians, and all the HOD's are Indian...so life is much smoother. So now I would like to put forward a simple question to all who disagrees...Give me 5 good reasons, why will you do your PG from IOM or BPKIHS,and not a private institute?i agree in the aforesaid 2 institutes on an average day any OPD will more than 200 patients, whereas in the private ones they will attract about 100-120 patients....and the second question is does it really make a significant difference?because you alone will not see 200 patients..at best you can manage 50 pts per day,if u see them properly(not just prescribing a paracetamol,or some antibiotics to a patient of fever blindly and just let them go)Maybe you wont see a patient of nail patella syndrome, mesangial sclerosis or Duke psydoderma syndrome in the private ones....but once again does it really matter.I sincerely and honestly urge all the members to think positively and attain a more career oriented attitude.Remember you need to be competent enough and better than the average doctors of India to make a mark... the age of being average...living an average life...and doing an average job is far gone...when you are spending so much to become a doc...why not earn it back handsomely and efficiently...??maybe some will curse me to death, but I believe, when I have paid so much, stayed in an alien land for so many days, just to become a doctor...I have every right to earn it back promptly, but staying in the right track...now it all depends on every individual...so best of luck and all the wishes to all....please do correct me,if I am wrong in any statement..Thanks.

hello dreamseller,
The PG entrance at BPKIHS is based on the MBBS curriculum, just on the lines of AIPG. The exam is MCQ based, and the standard of questions is comparable to our Indian PG entrances, but the competition is definitely much much lesser!
I don't think any model/previous papers are available anywhere(most people use our MK and AA for prep). hope this info helps.
