By the way what is VA. Kindly enlighten people like us who are not used to abbrevations (VA = Vertebral Artery ??)

A ernest request is to avoid abbrevations except forwellknown abrrevations like IVC, IHD etc

What will you think when someone tells of

MI, Myocardial Infarction or Mitral Incompetence
MS, Mitral Stenosis or Multiple Sclerosis
CBD, Common Bile duct or Continous Bladder Drainage
RTA, Ryles Tube aspiration of Road Traffic Accident

I still remember an Incident during Internship. The Chief had asked the Post gradute to get PCR done for a patient. The PG Duly obliged and the next day in grand rounds it turned out that the chief intended for Protein Creatinine ratio (done in the free hospital lab itself ) and the test done was a not so cheap Polymerase Chain Reaction (Hope you all know how much it costs) in a Private lab. That was a costly mistake. Fortunately for that patient, it was just money that he had to spent (rather than his health which is very costly). Imagine situation like this when we misinterpret a Treatment (rather than an investigation) or do an invasive test for an non invasive one.

That was a unforgettable lesson for me to avoid using abbrevations, unless it is very clear about what is being referred to.

I hope you will take this a clue to minimise (avoiding is not possible) investigations

well doc,
this is how i cud solve this....

PAco2=0.863(Vco2/VA)

where,Vco2 is CO2 produced per minute.
VA is ventilation

so,when the ventilation is doubled,
n the metabolic rate remains the same,

dat means,new VA is twice the original VA.
n Vco2 remains same!

by applying above equation,
new PaCo2 becomes half the original Paco2,ie 20 becomes 10. 8)

now,
we all know ths formula,

PaO2=FIo2(Pb-Ph2o)-Pco2/R

so,putting all the constant variables for respiration at sea level,we get a simplified equation-----

PaO2=150-1.25(PaCo2)

now,putting the new PaCo2 in this equation,
we get the answer.

what i have read is that O2 saturation depends on CO2 concentration. if CO2 was 20 orignally and it has reduced to 10 then O2 would increase by 10 and vice versa. Sorry if i am wrong.......
