Quick Scroll Tips: Rule For Cracking MRCS Intercollegiate Exam Part 1 07.25.04 (4 years ago) #1

Dear All,

Hi guys and gals,
Just read your mails and found that you all are quite confused as to how to go about studying for MRCS Intercollegiate Exam Part 1......

Dont worry relax,,,,we have all been through this and here are a few tricks.....

1.Break your syllabus into components- Anatomy
Physiology
Pathology and Microbiology
Pharmacology (if any is asked)

2. Now take one subject at a time and select books

Anatomy - no. of books are available like ---- Harrold Ellis
Raftery
Last
Keith L moore
BRS Anatomy

i would advise you take up one small book and one big refernce book

in this case that would be BRS Anatomy and Last.....
no doubt harrold ellis is clinically oriented and raftery is only a replica of harrold ellis as far as Anatomy is concerned.....and Keith L Moore is too big.......

now once you have decided the subject and the books now select the topics......Anatomy -----Upper Limb
Lower Limb
Thorax
Abdomen
Pelvis and Perineum
Back
Head and Neck

In our times Histology, Brain and Embryology were not important at all......only in Brain one was supposed to know about ventricles and blood supply and thats it......

now take each topic and do it well...remember if you do it well now it will only help you out later in your preparation for viva as basic sciences form an important part of viva about 50 percent.....my advice is to make notes as you go along......highlighting important keypoints.asked in mcqs......

example in upper limb you should know

in osteology.....
1.humerus--

a. biccipital groove--lodges tendon of biceps brachii muscle whose synovial sheath can reach up to surgical neck of humerus.

b. glenoid cavity is deepened by glenoid labrum.

c. axillary nerve and post circumflex humeral artery pass at surgical neck

d. ant circumflex humeral artery and long head of biceps tendon at biccipital groove

e. profunda brachii artery and radial nerve at radial groove.

2. radius

a. know articulations of distal end

b. colles fracture

3. ulna

a. it does not articulate with any carpal bones but forms an articular disc for inferior radioulnar joint.

4. carpal bones

a. proximal row bones

b. distal row bones

esp scaphoid boneits attachment and articulates with and its blood supply....

in joints and ligaments you should know acromioclavicular joint , shoulder joint, rotator cuff, ,ligaments, bursas, elbow joint and wrist joint.

dermatomes.....u should know...

cephalic vein is important
lymphatic vessels
axillary sheath
breast
pectoralis major muscle ,serratus anterior esp cutting its nerve supply results in winging of scapula....,deltoid musclesupraspinatus, infraspinattus, teres minor and lattisimus dorsi, biceps ,triceps, FDS,FDP,attachemnt of extensor mscs of forearm to lateral epicondyle, opponens pollicis, adductor pollicis, lumbricals, interossie

quadrangular and triangular space, cubital fossa, palmar aponeurosis, carpal tunnel and its syndrome, synovial flexor sheaths, anatomical snuff box, brachial plexus and result of its injury, musculocutaneous nerve, axillary nerve, median nerve, radial nerve, ulnar nerve these nerves and the result of injuring them at different levels....,at wrist you should know the structures present from medial to lateral side...
axillary ,brachial artery and deep palmar branch, ulnar artery....

in short this is about it from upper limb..once you have done it then pick up any Anatomy mcq book and then solve as many mcqs as possible........by this way you will know what is important for upper limb topics.....also do not keep many days for one topic.....keep it to a minimum......

i hope i have not added to the confusion and have helped in clearing out some things...if not i apologize....

take care all....
work hard ,pray and ull pass...
sarah.

hi guys,

well sara that was a pretty nice overview of the upper limb. and a very good strategy to divide our curriculum.

just wanted to add my own way of studying, at least Anatomy , i just pick up an atlas and read the portion of that from cover to cover, there is something said about a picture doing what requires more than thousand words or something of the sort, thats the way i do Anatomy , and i just wanted to share it with you guys.

take care,

wolf

hi all,
thanks for the appreciation...wish i could write down all the topics which r important for u all but time is one thing which i am short of....though i will try to come and post few things now and again....

as for raftery well bent doing it from just one book is never enough for any exam....its just that raftery has all the topics in it which r likely to come and has given it clinically which ofcourse is very important.....but it is not a complete book...if u know what i mean....

as for writing down important topics of each chapter im sure if u go thru BRS Anatomy ull know it has everything in it and if u r still not clear then pick up the snells Anatomy and go thru only the clinically relevant part given at end of each chapter...ull know automatically what u r expected to know.......i hope this helps and if still unclear i will try to post the imp topics but that will take time....plz do bear with me.....

take care,
and good luck...
sarah.

To wolf icon_biggrin.gif
u can place ur e-mail anywhere , and if corwood made any "clever" moves , then he will regret creating this forum ! People are posting horrible stuff in PLAB 2 forum and he is doing nothing !! I believe Corwood the site admin is 80% a machine u know, he doesn't exist !
Any way it is legal to post mails anyway , what is illegal is to request them (what i did) and i don't give a damn about "him" u know!! sorry for being long ! another way is u can click on your name (since ur a user) and add whatever details u wish !!!
