A 25-year-old woman in her 22nd week of pregnancy develops
hypertension and mild proteinuria. Due to the baby's gestational
age, her obstetrician chooses to carefully monitor the mother fo
r any sign of developing complications rather than to immediately
deliver the baby.
Which of the following complications account for the most maternal deaths in preeclampsia?
A. Cerebral edema and laryngeal edema
B. Cerebral hemorrhage and adult respiratory distress syndrome
C. Convulsions and renal tubular necrosis
D. HEMOLYSIS and hepatic infection
E. Hepatic rupture and renal cortical necrosis
it shud be b) right |
though progression to ecclampsia,is the most dreaded complication of pre eclampsia, only 2% of the patients actually progress to ecclampsia.
i remember, cerebral h'ge as the most common cause of maternal death in pre eclampsia.
but surprisngly, nothing is mentioned in Dutta abt this.
can anyone ref William's & confirm this?

these are the lines from e medicine website:
Preeclampsia is the third leading pregnancy-related cause of death, after hemorrhage and embolism. Preeclampsia is the cause in an estimated 790 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births.
Morbidity and mortality is related to systemic endothelial dysfunction; vasospasm and small-vessel thrombosis leading to tissue and organ ischemia; CNS events such as seizures, strokes, and hemorrhage; acute tubular necrosis; coagulopathies; and placental abruption in the mother.
browsing through other websites, i could gather that cerebral haemorrhage is a common cause of mortality and thus the answer is option b)
