Herd immunity by definiton says protection of any one individual from a disease by the fact that everyone around him is immune to the disease and thus he can never be exposed directly.

Or the other way around the herd immunity is the immunity of a group or community. The resistance of a group to invasion and spread of an infectious agent, based on the resistance to infection of a high proportion of individual members of the group.

So first is true for herd immunity.

Now the diseases which give herd immunity actually are mostly subclinical like measles, polio etc. So the second choice is wrong.

Regarding the third one, tetanus cannot be transmitted from person to person and the vaccine we give is against tetanus toxoid. This vaccine cannot be therefore protective to surrounding individuals as in polio. So there is no herd immunity in tetanus because an unimmunized person is not protected even if every person around is immunized.

This leaves third one as obvious choice as answer to the question

thanks chand --
your definition quoted makes the idea clear.

i get the point how 3 is correct
i was so far considering the -INDIVIDUAL AS that person whom we are giving Toxoid ---it is infact the one who hasnt got the toxoid .he wont be protected.

thanks again for putting this very clear defintion.

i would go with 2. if we carefully follow the question, the 3rd option should be read as herd immunity doesnot protect the individual in the case of tetanus, so 3rd option is true. but 2nd is false. first is also correct.
so the answer is 2

This is FALSE and here immunity is more for infections that HAVE a subclinical Phase
