Make a timetable

Plan your study carefully. There is no point in flicking through your Anatomy book with such lack of enthusiasm and boredom that you get through only one chapter in three months. On the other hand, do not be ridiculously overambitious in your aims: setting yourself two hours to learn the entire Physiology of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems is a trifle optimistic. Once you have made your plan, try and stick to it--if you keep taking a week longer for each chapter than you had intended you will have a huge panic at the end. Remember, it is better to know everything moderately well than to be an expert in only 1% of the syllabus. It is futile knowing the Anatomy of the dorsum of the upper limb digits like the, er, back of your hand, if you would not recognise a lower limb if you fell over one

Think in terms of amount learnt, not hours

As a student, I wasted many, many months sitting staring at the same page of some vast volume, daydreaming about what I would buy next, or where I would go that weekend. I equated being miserable and torturing myself with virtuous study, surmising that if I was having a hideously dull time then it must be doing me some good. Sadly, the adage "no pain, no gain" is not necessarily true in reverse--that is, pain does not automatically lead to gain. I was also envious of my best mate who could sit and study intensively for hours at a time, then pack his books up and go and have fun. My method involved self punishment. When I caught myself daydreaming, I would forgo little treats like the late night outing or the movie at the weekend and spend these times staring at the same page. Again. This was not constructive.

Give yourself rewards

If you have something to aim for it is far easier to motivate yourself. Tell yourself that if you learn the chapter really well, then you will allow yourself a treat. Whether this is a night out, daroo party, some new clothes, a day off at the weekend, or whatever, is up to you. But be strict with yourself. If you spend the day skiving off instead of studying then you must forgo your treat. No cheating.

Don't be tempted to try faddy methods

I found studying so immensely painful that I always believed there was some secret trick that would suddenly render it all easy. This was not the case then, nor tragically, is it now. My hostelmate and I amassed many different systems that would miraculously change our lives, making studying a doddle. Highlighter pens were one--the idea was that you would go through your notes or the textbook, highlighting salient points so that they would lodge themselves stubbornly in your memory.

Unfortunately, my highlighter pen did not stop me from daydreaming, and I ended up with many textbooks in which every second word would be religiously highlighted, whether it was a key word or just "and" or "a."

methods of answering mcqs!!
1.best method: answer all mcqs in first attempt. revise the mcqs at the end, check on answersheet also.

2.better method:answer some mcqs in first attempt, revise some of the mcqs left. check answeres of all mcqs.

3.good method:answer some mcqs in first attempt, revise some of the mcqs left. check answers of some mcqs randomly on answer sheet

4. bad method. answer most of some mcqs in first attempt.revise those left.spend more time on touch mcqs

5.worst method: answer few mcqs in first attempt. revise only those attempted.change answers of most of the mcqs.

hope this helps all the pg aspirants .. all the best !!!

Well...there's no single path to success. Each person may devise his or her own route which can ultimately lead to success...the common thing being whole hearted approach. As everybody said. not the no. of hours but the no. of things u learnt in one day is important. If u devote 16 hrs. and still learn just 4-5 things, then it's a mere wastage of time. It implies either u r a day dreamer, or u r studying half heartedly,or u r not working with ur full capacity. Better wud it have been if u had gone for some outing instead !
Also, it's not practically possible to study at a stretch for more than 3hrs. Always give urself a break when u get tired instead of going on studying. That will again eat up ur time as ur brain wont be that receptive then. So , better take a walk, talk to ur frnds, watch any filmi song or listen music and then start again.

Quick Scroll Amount Vs. hours 08.06.04 (4 years ago) #16

Hey,

At our state, I guess we all know that it is the amount of topics that we study is more important than hours. And when I mean by hours, I really mean the amount of 'good' hours that you spend learning topics whole-heartedly. I would say that 12 hours is good. But you can go upto 15 if you have a tough mind.

Also spread out your studying time in smaller divisions. eg. 3 hour each. Take a break in between. Do whatever you want in between. But get back to the books with some vengeance when you do.

I really think that some exercise can liven up your study sessions. Do some jogging/sport if you can spare time.

Cheers

Dr. Kay

hi aim a fresher- aiming fro aipg 2006.here's wat i have gathered from the pgts here -and thats wat i have been following.

if you have one year to study-its best if you can maintain 12 hrs study evry day.very minimum ten- and my seniors here tend ot believe that how much you did in ur ug years-does ot count. its a whoel new exam -and a whoel new praparation.

and basically if you are donig 12 hours a day- divide it into two 5 hr halves- and study different subjects in each of those two halves.
and the remaining two hours -just go for mcqs.keep one day evry week for revising the stuff u studied for the rest of the week.dont do any thing new on that day-preferably a sunday.

and try to make a routine covering all the subjects a year ago.keeping last one and a half month for revision
