Hi all this is a new post to share information about and discuss about the Area of Need Pathway (AONP) to Australia
. I will share all the information I have on the AONP. This is information I have and may not be a 100% accurate. Feel free to add, comment or question! Lets us discuss and clarify all our doubts on the AONP
The AONP is for those doctors who have a minimum of 2 years of experience in India or 1 year in the U.K. ie post internship experience
By definition they will send you where they have a shortage, hence area of need!!! Don't expect to land up immediately in a major city!!!
You are usually granted a visa of one year at a time, extendable to upto a maximum of four years
During the four years to progress further you must pass the AMC exam (both parts) and then take up one year of supervised training before you become eligible for full registration. Once you have full registration you are free to pursue your career anywhere in Australia
If your training post is at the Registrar/ PHO level then you can apply for exemption to the one year supervised training, after passing the AMC. No guarantees on exemption
After completing two years in the AONP you are eligible to enter the GP program
Advantages:
1. You are working as a clinical doctor while preparing for your AMC
2. You are therefore gaining Australian experience, i guess this will be better than having no Australian experience when competing for jobs
3. You are of course being paid and therefore not being a burden to anyone back home
4. Since you know more about the Australian system, it will be an advantage in the clinical exams
Disadvantages
1. You are in the AON which may be a rural inaccesible area
2. Hospitals may be so short that they promise you the moon but you maybe in for a shocker when you actually get there
Feel free to add anymore information to what I have added
Cheers

More Advantages:
Well your accommodation etc is sorted out before you reach there
Your tickets and relocation costs are borne partly or wholly by the recruiting hospital. The rule of thumb here is that the closer you are to a city the less the expenses paid

well i thot it was one year for uk experience but now im not sure
although i wud have 14 months exp by feb when i plan 2 go
a friend of mine go rejected 2day owing to lack of exp
by feb he would have 21 months of uk exp plus MRCS
part2 plus every imaginable course under the sun: ALS, ATLS, EPLS, BSS and CCrISP
with regards to how to apply well there are direct ads by the hospitals and recruitment agents ( I cant give websites without the rxpg guys going snip)
I would take the recruitment agents cos of the additional help u get during ur processing!!

Hey all I am an Indian doctor who has got an offer to work in two different hospitals
1. A&E in a hospital near Brisbane, Queensland
2. Pediatric A&E, Adelaide, Southern Australia
which one should I take? Keeping in mind the sentiments of the Ozzies following the situation involving Dr. Death?

Urgent Advice

Dear All, I have been offered AON job in Australia
as a HO in a costal town at 4 hours drive from Sydney. I am presently in UK, post PLAB
, registered with GMC and working unpaid as Honorary SHO in Medicine. I have done MRCP
part1 and am taking MRCP
part 2 in December. I want to stay in Uk and there is around a 60-70% chance that i might get a job in the hospital in UK in which I am doing honorary SHO job in Feb. But the job situation is very volatile here these days and there is no surety of anything. I am otherwise a PG in medicine and have completed my requirement for PACES. So it is a matter of passing the exams.
I want to delay that the job offer in Australia
but dont know how to convince my sponser. And I am quite discouraged by the things about Australia
that i hear from this site, the time it takes to move on to a training post. Can any one advise me what to do.
Thanks in advance....

Hey Mass
Sorry dude
I think most people ask for a minimum of two years experience for the AONP
But you could try though
There always have been exceptions
