hello nitin, thanks for replying...but then current travels from anode to cathode!!....
I mean what is the logic behind transfer of electrons and stimulation of axon...impulse conduction is transfer of positive ions...how is electron transfer related to that....

Hello Dr Krishna....I donot how others put the selection of cathode over anode as stimulating electrode but here is a small explanation from my side.....

The interior of cells is electronegative as compared to exterior and that is why the normal negative potential. Anything that increases electronegativity inside would hyperpolarise it and anything that increases positivty actually depolarises it. For action potential generation we need depolarisation....

When we place a cathode near an axon and apply a DC current in the form of spikes, what we are doing actually is increasing negativity in proximity to cell membrane of axon. This causes accumulation of positive charges beneath the membrane that depolarizes the cell locally and hence AP generation. Anode actually hyperpolarizes the cell.......

I am attaching this figure to explain my text diagramatically. The square wave shown in osciloscope is basically stimulus artifact and the interval between the action potential wave and stimulus artifact is the latency from which we calculate the conduction velocity......

from u'er figure it seems that the propagation of A.P. IS FROM CATHODE TO intacellular electrode

see this ......
