research work typically happens in 3 stages
the first stage would be to write a research proposal and submit it to the ethics comittee of your respective hospitals
the research proposal should like shuvo said... include the backgruond on why you wanna do the research... how u wanna do the research... what is the scope of your research.... and what you intend to prove by doing your research

besides it would also need to cover two important disclosures/... disclosure of financial interest... and disclosure of acquaintance or memorandum of understanding with any of the drug companies or suppliers of the product that is being researched

after the research proposal has been approved... you need to do the research....

and then finally when the research is done it needs to be analyzed... some of the automatic analysis tools available on the net are spss and epi
i personally prefer to use epi info which is a software developed by cdc/// usa

once the research is ready you need to write down the abstract which is a short summary of the research work in about 200 to 300 words... journals are very specific in their word restriction...
and plus you need to write down the manuscript the regulations of which are a little different with every journal

most journals will ask you to first submit the abstract and the manuscript as well.... and thereafter will come the publication...
most journals accept online submissions too

speaking from experience.... i am a final year resident in emergency medicine... i have 2 international paper presentations to my name and 2 to come in the near future..at the EMSSA south africa
my name is dr. anunaya jain
please feel free to contact me for any querries
my phone no. is [snip]

before you start ur study or research project always keep in mind the goal that ur aiming for... u must have it clear in your mind as to how ur study will affect ur patient care.. or how it will benefit the insight into patients... lots of people do case seires and all but they are not really considered as research esp in the western world...
so remember ur research question should contain the querry as to how its gonna affect or benefit currently existing knowledge..
take care
if you guys have any other querries please feel free to write or call me on [snip].
also please visit the post on emergency medicine in hyderabad in the prepg section... read my notes on that.... its a great course and admissions are happening soon
