i am from india and i just cleared my step 1 an step 2 ..i am thinking of coming to NZ for working..my doubt is ...i am a MBBS graduate..and from the nz site i understand that .. a person like me will have to clear the NZREX exam ,after that apply for registration as a provisional general scope..then i got to work for 12- 24 months under a supervisor..to be eligible for the general scope..so the question is ...what after that..do i continue working as A GP the rest of my life or do i get to choose to work and study in a specialisation of my choice so i can be eligible for the vocational scope..
what about the visa type..??what kinda of visa should i apply for to enter NZ to give my NZREX..will appreciate if u reply soon

Hi,
It is all up to you.In my mind, think before step in .Because New Zealand
is not an ideal place to find a job.Try and find in U.S.After all you have done USMLE
1 and 2 Try to finnish step3.I am quite sure you will be able to manage to finnish final step.Do not think that i am telling something bad.But it is the reality in New Zealand
.No help from the government according to a friend of mine.

The thing is ..i was denied a visa..thats why the US is closed for me..so New Zealand
is the next option...didnt want to waste all that energy i put in for the USMLE
..since they accept step 1 and 2 scores

Hi Dr Ben Star,
I can feel how anguished you feel after having spent so much of your valuable resource on the USMLE
exams and being then denied the visa.May be fate has some better options in store for you.
Most of the questions that you have put up are ambiguous and I am sure not many people would be in a position to give you a pretty satisfactory anwer to them.
Well I can give you a rough idea of what goes on here.
First to enter the country is an official matter which would best be approached if you can get in touch with the High Commission of NZ in Delhi. They have a special category of permit called the Skilled Migrant Quota and you can ask there education counsellor about whether you fullfill the criterias laid down in it.I myself was married to a citizen here so did not have any problem.
Once you fullfill the pre-requisite viz.IELTS
,USMLE
Step-1 & 2CK you sit the NZREX OSCE
held every March and October(probably the world's most expensive exam, with the examination fee of NZ $3750.00).Once you cross these preliminary hurdles you are provisonally registered by the MCNZ and begin one year of Supervised Housemanship after having applied by oneself to a District health board of ones own choice(this is not the responsibility of the medical council).Completion of the above makes you eligible for registration under the general scope of practice. After this you try fullfilling the various criterias for PG exams of your choice like FRACS or FRACP as laid down by their respective authorities.
So you see life of a doctor is all about fullfilling criterias and proving your competence(better to be born as a Rugby Player!!!).
Do not seriously get carried away by any negative comments about any country because we as human beings tend to describe and perceive things as we want them to be and not as what they truly are.So whether you are in the US,the UK ,Australia
or NZ life is not a piece of cake. One has to struggle to prove ones worth and metal.Have the guts to follow your instincts and forget what people say because that is what they will do around you always. The decision is always yours.
Since I have just started my medical adventure in NZ(cleared the NZREX this March) this is all the information I can impart to you at the moment .
Take care and all the best for your future.
Andrey.

Dear Dr Andrey
First of all thank you very much for ur reply and ur time. You have no idea how long i have been waiting for somone to reply to my queries. I almost thought no one would , either bec nobody really knows anything about NZ or coz of the competition among IMGS..they wouldnt want one more rat in the race....woud they???..i believe the latter reason is true ...for reasons which i shall mention below . I did a lot of searching on the net the past one week , mailing different recruiting agencies and i have received mixed responses from some of them. I also found about how the system works within NZ regarding houseofficer ship position ..the ACE system ..similar to the ERAS of US ...it clearly mentions that IMGS will be considered only after NZ citizens and residents have filled all the vacancies and a vacant seat will be granted to an IMG only after no NZlander is available for the slot ......its pretty much clear that NZ dont like IMGS esp from india etc...one agency said that i was wasting my time applying to NZ ...they said i have ZEro percent chance of making it ....they had lot of imgs from last year who didnt make it thru their agency inspite of their support..they were also transparent enough to tell me that ...the NZ govt dont like Indian Imgs since a lot of them are around..and that there are a lot of docs from UK applying too...
So anyway thank you for ur time...
wish u all the best..
ben
