thanx guys
i think i got it
therer 2 alleles of a gene in r somatic cells
so there r 30,000 -40,000 genes in a human being
& two copies of each of these genes r the alleles!
c this link---

thats why harri says 30000 genes r divided in 23 chromosomes & also that 23 pairs encode for 30000 genes

some definitions 2 clarify the basics---Allele.---An alternate form of a gene, in other words a gene that provides instructions for a slightly different version of the same polypeptide as the other member of a gene pair at the same location on a chromosome.

Alleles are a way of identifying the two members of a gene pair which produce opposite contrasting phenotypes. An allele of a gene is it's partner gene, for example b is an allele of B and vice versa. When the alleles are identical, the individual is homozygous for that trait. While if the pair is made of two different alleles, the individual is heterozygous.(http://library.thinkquest.org/20465/genes.html)
