Complications of Thiopentone

General

1.Respiratory depression
2.Cardiovascular depression
3.laryngospasm & brochospasm
4.hiccoughs & coughing
5.allergic manifestations - cutaneous rash,pruritis to severe anaphylaxis
6.postop disorientation,vertigo,euphoria(delirium)

Local -

*s/c or i.m - tissue necrosis & ulceration

*intra- arterial - severe burning pain down the inj site --> pallor,cyanosis,edema & finally gangrene of the limb

*i/v - pain uncommon (1-2 %)

* thrombophlebitis

*inj to median nerve

2-PAIN -> 1-2% but more with i/v extravasation,true as well
3-SPASM --> laryngo/bronchospasm ,True
4-HYPOTENSION ---> true, decreased Myocard. contractility --> Low BP
4-MUSCULAR EXCITATION ---> Thio given to control excitation False

1-RASH (if you give high concentrate drug)
2-PAIN ( It is only painful if it is concentrate or artery injection-malpractice)
3-SPASM ( can do at sensitive patients)
4-HYPOTENSION ( depends on drug dose)
4-MUSCULAR EXCITATION ( for a short time)

i.v thiopentone causes hypotension more commonly.
pain is caused on intra arterial injection and not on i.v. injection.
no thiopentone doesnot cause rash on i.v. injection
