MBBS Nigeria. 5 yrs med. in Germany. Want work in Canada

I am a Nigerian with permanent residency in Germany.
My medical training (MBBS) was in Nigeria 1998 but I have been practising in Germany (internal medicine) for the past 5 years. I am planning re-locating out of Germany and I really consider working in Canada
.
I am meant to understand that some state have qualifying exam and some have exemptions for doctors with western experience. E.g Newfoundland?
Could somebody please give me a short clue into what applies here and where I stand a better / easier chance of getting registration.
In reciprocation, I am willing to answer question relating to medical practise in Germany with foreign certificate.
Thanks

Why do you want to go to Canada? Germany is such a nice country. You already have board certification there, got your PR status.
In Canada there are lot of restrictions to foreign trained doctors. What I know is they do not recognise any foreign degree except that of US. For US they have reentry of repatriation programs.
For other countries it is the same- apply for MCC licensing exams and after passing the first part, apply to the IMG according to the province you want to stay and then apply for residency training or if you pass IMG exam and you are a specialist already and have been practicing for quite some time > 5years, then CPSO will evaluate your credentials and may exempt a year of residency or even the total if you are sucessful in the IMG exams.
Then you get a restricted license for 5 years- serve some underserviced region and then complete the board certification during these five years. This means you have to write another set of exams and have to pass this exam within the stipulated time limits.
First and foremost you have to apply for a PR status in Canada
without that you cannot work in Canada
.
So in total you have 8 exams to write including the test of english and it will take minimum of five years to process the whole thing. and out of 100 candidates only 12 are accepted- so it is very tough!
Well this is the summary

I have been wasting my time in Germany.
The medical system in Germany is completely different. There don't do
residency here and they don't write exams. You just work and after 6 years
become a specialist. Thatīs all. Thereafter no more exams. You can become a
senior specialist (Oberarzt) to a consultant on appointment. . To worsen it
all is that Germany has the least paid doctors in western Europe. The work
here is so much that one hardly has time to sit external exams. No other
person does so there is no motivation to do so.
Imaging what happens after 6 years of not writing or reading for any exams.
?
Anyway thatīs just a few of the problems. There are other social problems
involved and we have decided to leave for good.
Are you a bit in the light now`?
I have been in the training and I am due for the specialist exam mid next year. I shall wriite and pass the exam before moving out of here.
Thanks for that note.

working is learning afterall. each patient you attend is an examination!
if you are talking of classroom exams, they are boring. practical training is what is most important. all the best wishes for you

Hi skeezeereez, I think that Ameer has done well in replaying to ur inquiries.
I'm really happy to find someone who really is into the german medical system, if u pass through Germany forum here u will notice that it is not very active & helpfull, may be because of lack of informations.
But what we really want is ur help regarding enrollment into Germany training programmes for foriegn certificate graduates, My german language is very weak but I may have a sponser to fund my study.
what are my chances? & requirement needed?
thank u.

Medicine in Germany

Hi,
I am a German citizen, went to Med School in Germany. It is a beautiful country with good quality of life, but as it has been mentioned before, there are some huge downsides for MDs.
1. no organized residency programms, you will just be working and trying to figure out things for yourself, hardly any teaching
2. very little money, you will be making roughly as much as people who work 9-5 jobs in the insurances or other offices.
As to how to get into there... the main problem will be that doctors from the european union will have privileges compared to everybody else. Other than that, there is no real organization like CARMS or the match in the US. Have your diplomas translated, do a german language test and apply to all hospitals you can find. Check the "deutsches aerzteblatt stellenanzeigen" it should be the biggest job market for Germany (and Switzerland/Austria). Many German doctors go to Switzerland for the money, by the way....
I would not leave a secure position in Germany before you have not done all the exams, immigration and so on, the odds are to low and it will take you at least two years to have all the stuff done. Basically you can do everything from Germany with a little travel to Canada
. Do not give up your job before you have a residency or other spot secured here!
Good Luck!

Thanx for such info. So it means its better to apply for USMLE
than to germany. It 'll take some 2 yrs to have a good job in US if there is big problem.
