here is a provision in our college(kmc manipal) to do an elective posting in 8th semester for one month abroad...can anyone pls tell me the kind of visa i need to apply for doing it in the us...will tourist visa do??? im an indian national... mle aspirant..

The same lesson to you dude. KUMC, Manipal has allowed you for one month elective doesn't mean that American University has accepted you. The same funda applies to you. Clinical Electives are highly competitive.

Do you have something attractive on your CV? If not, then you can only try out your luck because to give STEP 1 in 8th Semester is NOT possible. So go ahead and throw the dice. Apply in 6-8 programs (that don't require STEP 1 or TOEFL scores for clerkship) to maximize your chances. Hope this much helps.

1. I and my wife have a visitor's visa to the US (B1). Can I use this to travel to the US for the CS exam? Also can my wife use her visa to give NBDE part 1 in the US? Does the US embassy need to be told about my purpose of visit here or at the US entry point?

2. Suppose I get a residency, can my wife join me on my visa? And can she persue dental studies in the US on this visa? Or will she require a seperate visa for herself?

3. My sister is a US citizen. How can she help me in getting a GC / work permit?

1. You can give exams on visit visas, but check the visa sites for more info.
2. If you get a residency, i think your wife cant join you with it, unless you specify she is dependent. Still depends upon your visa and program. ANd she needs a separate visa for her dental studies.
3. You sister can nominate you for a GC, not a work permit. But since she is a sibling, you will get your GC only after 11-14 years. I am surprised she hasnt applied for your GC yet.

disclaimer: i am not an expert in US visa matters. Please read my advice and then head to the websites on VISA matters. If you are unsure, get in contact with visa consulting firms. Or you can email the programs regarding your queries.
America VISA regulations change almost every other year. And there are more than a 100 things to consider before any one rule can apply. So please refer to the updated regulations on the official US visa website.

Hey guys!!
My CS exam is on 15th May and I am taking step2 ck on 31st march. It means I will get the result of step 2 by 30th April. So I am thinking to take my visa appointment in the first week of May???
I mean just a week before my departure ticket date i.e 10th May?
1. Is it ok if I take the interview with such a short gap in between interview and departure date. I am doing this as I would be having my step 2 score in my hand which I can show the VO.

2. Is it Ok to depart on 10th May if I have exam on 15th May or should I go earlier. I would be staying in one of m friends house, so no problem with house searching etc.

3. Is it essential that I produce my property documents properly evaluated by authorised evaluator or just an approximate evaluation by my CA will be sufficient in NET WORTH certficate provided by him.

All the advices are welcome.

Thanks Ravi for all the info.
1. I understand that you get a J1 visa for residency. How difficult is it to get an H1? Do all colleges offer an H1?
2. If my sister applies for a GC now, wont my current B1/ B2 visa be invalid? I understand that one cannot travel to the U.S. if someone applies for an immigrant visa or GC for you?
3. How can me and my wife pursue our studies together and continue with our careers in the U.S
?

1. Alot of Residency programs do not offer H1, while some do. You need to visit their websites to know.
2. Well if your sister does apply for GC, it might or might not affect your visa chances. If you already have a B1 visa, there is no problem. You may visit using that visa, regardless of your GC petition. But the next time you apply for a visa and have a GC petition in your name you have to mention it on your form.
3. Your wife can apply individually. I think you need to consult a visa consulting firm i guess. I am really not sure about the spouse related visa.
Sometimes, for some programs, you can bring her as a dependent. But you need to check with the programs and their visa sponsoring rules.
