Dear Rajju or AshB
I am applying for the visa on 15th April. I have my step 1 scores in my hand but I wont be having my step 2 scores with me during the interview though I can show the visa officer the proof of attempt of step 2 exam.
Many persons on this forum has mentioned that they were asked to come back with step 2 scores?? what does that mean? were they rejected the visa and they have tp apply again and appear after 6 months??
or....
they could fix the appointment again within few days with the same HDFC bar code no.
Kindly clarify.
I wanna know if I am asked to come back with my step 2 scores... when can I again fix the appontment. I hope not only after 6 months.....

Once you appear for a interview, with or without documents, the interview is considered given, and the HDFC receipt is used.
I suggest you take your STep 2 scores. Unless they give you the 212b document, which means some verification, or additional documents are needed, you will have to get another interview appointment.
You can take an appointment immediately after you get your Step 2 scores. Best Of Luck for your interview, and appear for your interview only after you get your Step 2 scores. I presume they need to see your scores, so that they can have a better judgement about granting you a visa or not.
I hope AshB can give a better answer, because i havent appeared for a Visa interview for USMLE steps.

Rajju If i remember correctly its 221g instead of 212(b) when they need additional documents. It is also known as the yellow slip.

Manipalguy nobody knows a clear answer to your question. Lots of people get a visa with simply Step 1 score but many get rejected or get 221g. If you have a deifinite plan in my mind, I think you can go with only Step 1 score. Be prepared with answers to satisfy VO about your intentions.

I went with Step 1 score and CK appeared and the VO didn't even ask about it. So, you never know. You can think up some good reason for not waiting for the CK score, in case the topic comes up.

Good luck. smiley24.gif

Thanks Ash B
Actually I am taking step 2 on 31st . I would get the scores at around 27 0r 28th april. and I have my Step2 CS on 15th May. So I have less time in between.
Thats why I am thinking of taking the visa interview befor I get scoresof step 2
If anyone gets a 221g slip... can he fix up the apointment again after 10 to 15days (ofcourse he has to get another HDFC Receipt) or he has to wait for another 6 months??

What is this 6 months notion you keep repeating? I dont see it anywhere on the VIsa site.
I recommend you search the US visa site for your answers, or the forums related to it, or you can simply email the consulate. They are in a better position to reply to your query.
Anyway, i just googled, and here is your information, didnt take more than 30 seconds .
221(g)

Applicants are ineligible under section 221(g) because the applicant failed to bring some information or document, or some further procedure or review by our office or another U.S. government agency must be completed.

Please follow these instructions for a 221(g) refusal:

1.If you have been requested to wait until the Consulate contacts you, please do not make an appointment. Your case requires further administrative processing and the Consulate will contact you once this has been completed.
2.If you have applied in Chennai and were issued a 221(g) letter and asked to come back when you are prepared with all the required documents, please do not make an appointment. You may appear at the Consulate on any working Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday in the morning (between 10:00 and 12:00). If your visa was not issued under section 221(g), you are required to fill out a new application form when you reapply.
3. If your visa was denied under section 221(g) at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, or the Consulates General in Mumbai or Kolkatta, and you are instructed to reapply in Chennai, you must complete the following steps to be seen for an interview in Chennai.

A. Provide your information to the Consulate's authorized courier agent, VFS, at one of the following locations:

B. After providing your information to one of the authorized offices above, appear at the U.S. Consulate General in Chennai on any working Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Please bring an electronic copy of DS-156 (please click here for a copy of DS -156 form)

C. If your interview in Chennai is for the same visa and is within one year of the 221g refusal, you will not be required to pay another application fee. However, you are required to fill out a new application form.

4. If you have applied at one of our embassies or consulates outside of India, have been refused under section 221(g) and you are instructed to reapply in Chennai, please make an appointment on the website -

to come in for your next interview. You will be required to pay the application fee and to fill out a new application form.

FOR MUMBAI CONSULATE :

Applicants are ineligible under section 221(g) because the applicant failed to bring some information or document, or some further procedure or review by us or another U.S. government agency must be completed.

Please follow the instructions that were given to you at the time of your refusal.

* If you have been requested by a Consular Officer to make an appointment and appear in person at the Consulate, please visit the VFS website to make the appointment.
* If the letter you received requests you to appear in person at the Consulate without an appointment, please do not make an appointment. You must come to the Consulate at 10:00 a.m. on any working day, Monday-Friday. Please note that the Consulate is closed to the public on the second and last Friday every month, as well as on official U.S. holidays and most official local holidays.

If you have been requested to wait until the Consulate contacts you, please do not make an appointment. Your case requires further administrative processing and the Consulate will contact you once this has been completed.

If your visa was not issued under section 221(g), you may be required to fill out a new application form. Please refer to the instructions that were given to you at the time of your refusal. If you reapply for a visa within one year of a 221(g) refusal, you will not need to pay a new application fee.

Again i REPEAT< visit the OFFICIAL CONSULATE SITE>

the VO can ask anything, anytime, they arent predictable. If they ask where you would be living, its always better to tell them where. I doubt if they will want to see the confirmation or something.
But it will not aid in getting a visa.
It's perfectly ok to book a hotel or hostel if you dont have anyone else there.

Well, if you book a hotel in advance, that would be good. Otherwise you can take a print out of the suggested hotels at the ECFMG website. Show it to the VO and tell him that you intend to stay at one of those (highlight a couple of them as your top choices due to distance, price etc). You'll book once your visa is confirmed. Its not if you have booked your hotel or not but your confidence and perceived genuineness that would affect this and most other issues.
