Quote:
increase DPG which carries O2

Just to elaborate further-
As per the oxygen -Hb dissociation curve.Increase in concn of 2,3 DPG shifts the curve to the right.ie. will help in more of unloading of oxygen to the tissues. hence addition of glucose to the blood will produce more 2,3 DPG as a result of glycolysis & serve theis purpose. Yet as afar as possible, FRESH blood is the best choice for transfusion irrespective of whether u add dextrose or not, bcoz platelets & coagn factors r potent only if blood is fresh.

Hi Mani,

i have a different opinion :

INOSITOL IS ADDED IN BLOOD TO INCREASE 2-3-DPG .
(ref. Lippincot-biochem)

glucose in stored blood provides nutrition.

hey nadu!!!
still there is a confusion man .!!!
tell me do we want to decrease the 2-3 DPG in the stoed blood or do we want ti increase it...????
its been quoted ... thet acid cutrate dextrose is added to stored blood and this causes a preservational injury... that is it causes levels of 2-3 DPG to dcrease.
... so how can the glucose increase the 2-3 DPG level...????

basically in stored blood level of 2-3-DPG DECRESES.......SO that will shift oxy. diss. curve to right........less oxy. is supplied due to less oxy. delivary.

therefore in order to "MAITAIN" the level of 2-3-DPG we add INOSITOL
which increases the depressed 2-3-DPG in stored blood to normal.

Yaar Mani tum ek bar Lippincott padh lo, everything will b clear !

its a exellent book for concepts of bio-chem !
