is this a gud move?......ater a month shud i install d free version of avg.......?or any other antivirus u can suggest.
i m also using lavasoft adware, advaced windows care n active security monitor |
You can get AVG Professional Professional for free from here,
There is a free give away offer from computeractive online magazine.
Their servers are usually busy but it CAN be downloaded at Non-Rush hours like Early morning(Indian Standard Time) till January 17.
Comodo Firewall is better than Zone Alarm, But Nagging. If you don't want to see too many alerts, Open the main window and Disable its Pro Active Defense. This reduces security but is less nagging. Remember only Professional softwares like Kaspersky provides similar Pro-Active defense.
I have switched off the pro active defense as i install and unistall too many programs a day, so i am bound to get too many alerts.
Continue using Lavasoft Ad-Aware & Advanced Windows Care, both are very good freewares.
An year old McAfee and Zone Alarm are indeed outdated. Zone Alarm have really cut down their free version to a less useful firewall. McAfee AntiVirus is a good choice IF its a genuine professional version and your PC has >512MB RAM.

Open the Comodo firewall main menu
Click on the "Firewall" Tab
Go to "Define a new Trusted Application"
A box will open up, In it click "select" then "file groups" &
click "Windows Updater Application" then press "Apply"
Personally i don't use the Automatic Update.
I have set the Update to "notify me when updates are available"
Btw me too use Genuine XP.

BMG has posted wonderful intro to this thread....
but i guess, the best way to b carefree is by using either a MAC or any Linux distro (much much cheaper alternative!!) for accessing the internet.... linux is very user friendly these days... no worry of any horrors while installing!

Thanks pal.
You are right, Mac and Linux are indeed the safer one's. (due to the lack of compatible viruses/worms)

This is my Safety Score after the scan. Its poor I know! its showing no spyware in the details, though I got spybot installed yesterday itself! Actually I hadnt installed it back after installing comodo, thats the mistake I did I think.

First of all, Please accept my apologies for not updating the Initial posts in this thread.
All the softwares in the first page are >1 year old.
Just a few minutes back i have updated the Firewall and Anti-Spyware topics.
I will update the other posts soon.
Active Virus Shield have become an outdated software by now bcoz its makers stopped updating it.
They (AOL) haven't released any updates after June 07.
Since its outdated, its ratings can no longer be considered accurate.
So i would recommend you to uninstall that program.
From looking at your ratings, i have to add some points
Disable the "Hide extensions for known file types" option.
This option will hide the extensions of files, i.e a word file named "srins" will be seen as srins.doc if you disable that option.
If you have enabled that option, it will show up as "srins" only.
I will explain with an example, Imagine you plug in ur friends USB drive into your computer.
There is a virus file inside that drive named "important_letter.exe"
(.exe files are installation files)
If you have enabled "Hide extensions for known file types" you will see it as "important_letter" only. You wont see the .exe extension.
So u may mistake that it is an important letter (.doc) and you may open it,
causing your computer to get infected.
This is how we can disable "Hide extensions for known file types"
* Open "My Computer"
* Go to "Tools" and select "Folder Options"
* Click on the "View" tab, Scroll down
* Uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types"
" Press "Apply" Then "Ok"
Use a backup software like X-Drive or Mozy ( )
to store your important documents online.
A computer can crash any time.
You need to have your backups ready either in the form of CDs/DVDs or Online backups
