I removed the Active Virus Security n Soybot as well. And after seeing the detailed results of Security Score I had unchecked that option- 'hide extensions for known file types'.
But I'm not being able to get IE 7, I've tried thrice during the past few weeks using firefox as well as internet explore but to no use! Somehow the download fails after getting almost complete.

If you are using Firefox, then Internet Explorer 7 is not a necessity.
However if you really want to download the latest version of Internet Explorer
you can download Internet Explorer 8 Beta,

How to backup your Registry

Backing up your registry is important.
This can be vital if your pc gets infected with a virus.
Windows XP automatically backs up registry by system restore.
However you can do this manually also.

icon_arrow.gif Go to Start Menu

icon_arrow.gif Click on "Run"

icon_arrow.gif This will open the dialog box.

icon_arrow.gif Enter "regedit" without the quotes and press "Ok"

icon_arrow.gif This will open the Registry Editor.

icon_arrow.gif Go to "File" and click "Export"

icon_arrow.gif Save the file in a non system partition (eg: E,F)

icon_arrow.gif Quit the Registry Editor.

Yes it can be the reason.
Anyway since you have Firefox i don't think Internet Explorer 7 is a necessity.
Firefox 2 is a lot better than IE7.

Well an old version of Internet Explorer will not cause any problems in the system.
And it is advisable not to use it to access internet since IE6 is very primitive.
You are already on service pack 2. So ur system is almost up-to-date.
If you are on a Genuine version of Windows then you can go to

using internet explorer and you can download necessary updates.
However this demands a fast internet connection also.
If your internet connection is getting very slow, downloading these updates can take ages.
So its up to you. You can update if you want and ur system will be up to date.
Or you can decide not to update it, no big problem will happen.
