Quick Scroll FAQ: Which Linux distribution do you use? 01.28.07 (1 year ago) #1

Hi, I am starting with Damn Small Linux, will also try Ubuntu and Gentoo.

It is said that Ubuntu is one of the best. Gentoo is new but it allows kernel to be tweaked which may be useful for gaming.

So which Linux distribution do you people use?

I used to dual boot into red hat linux 9.0 but got bored after some time and back to winXp... its pretty amazing and powerful though.. u can do things which a windows user would think as impossible..
only thing that bothers is the steep learning curve

Hurray icon_biggrin.gif , let me talk about gaming. icon_razz.gif

I love it. I am not in to Linux and have no clue about it. But, I can tell you about games. For excellent gaming experience get a good CPU and graphic card (not shared and minimum of 250 MB DDR RAM one) then play those games again. You are going to love it. Go for PCI Express cards, they are better than AGP cards and they can reach up to 16x and more.

icon_biggrin.gif Imagine having a system with Intel Core Duo with 500 MB DDR PCI Express graphic card.

and you know what, I am going to have it in few weeks time icon_wink.gif

They are free, but old versions. Linux is an evolving operating system.

@VikingBoy: What was the speed of Linux as compared to Windows XP in your observation? Actually my system barely runs Windows98SE and i am worried that it might not run well.

actually linux runs fine on even very old systems if you are fortunate enuff to have the kind of hardware that has good support in linux driverwise...

the graphics were pretty solid and it performed (and looked) better than xp apart from the fact that i had to struggle a bit to get the sound working coz red hat 9.0 doesn't had native support for my sound card...

the beauty of linux is u can tweak the kernel urself (yes u can, its pretty easy) and just trash the modules that u dont use so ur kernel remains very small and thus fast... and so u can make it work with any hardware no matter how old...

@Vikingboy: Thanks for the advice. I downloaded a wrong version of (Damn Small Linux) DSL yesterday and cursing myself for it, the learning curve is steep but i am determined.
