One more doubt, if a person installs Gutsy Gibbon in an old Ubuntu OS(fiesty fawn), does he need to reinstall everything i.e all programmes? or does it install as an update/patch?

There is an option called distro upgrade. When you use the "update manager" it usually gives a line above all listed upgrades as "A new distro is available version number" with UPGRADE button. You could do the internet based upgrade which is safer. Installing over earlier OS might upset some dependencies.

It is also commonly mistaken that you can use only debian packages and cannot use other softwares. If software sources are available (which most probably is for most open source softwares) one can easily compile them for their system and install it.

Regarding games for Linux- There are a few good first person shooter games especially those that can be played online including Cube, Saubarten etc; There is a slightly glitchy but nevertheless realistic car racing game called TORCS. For hack and slash game lovers there is a game called FreedroidRPG (it is an RPG). There are also good old games like, solitaire, freecell etc; ported into linux. There are also games like Battle of Wesnoth (age of empires like concept) and more! I am not able to recall many others....

If you have small kids around childsplay and GCompris (with lots more games/activities than what windows version offers) are good!

Regarding video and audio. Proprietory codecs can be installed in ubuntu and they handle most formats easily. I use VLC and can play most formats including 3gp, dvd).

I use 64bit edition of Ubuntu and it has been quite good. If you are an ubuntu user, you could make it a bit faster by disabling "trackered". This used to eat up 97% of my dual processor's resources!!!!

Similarly Openoffice might load slow sometimes, you could disable java in the preferences and next time it will load a lot quicker.

Did the distro upgrade to hardy heron! 8.04 LTS. Seems fine to me, but I lost many customisations I had done that made flash work etc; in browsers. Now, I will have to perhaps rework on them.

Previously, Firefox 3 and Firefox 2+ stable version could be run parallel but now, it is not possible I guess cuz they both get into the same dir... So I lost my previous firefox that had flash and everything working....

But before that, I am going to tweak with the nvidia driver since the appearance at 800x600 resolution is really clumsy for me!

Installed NVIDIA and now the resolution is at 1200x800.

This looks elegant and small for my eyes. I do not need to scroll left and right for viewing pages anymore.

Sound works. It had a few issues with some packages and still gives some errors about not being able to configure few packages but I got it up and running and wouldn't mess much unless required.

Open office 2.4... I haven't tried it yet after it upgraded from 2.3. But it opened presentations and a document.

Yes, it is. Is it the 32 bit version or the 64 bit version? I hate to say I am forced to use wine to rune adobe icon_sad.gif There are some dependency problems which don't seem to resolve. It is bad that 64 bit version of softwares aren't that popular though there are many 64 bit systems and hardware!

Go there and upload the file using the "upload images directly from computer"... browse and point to the file. After you upload and the upload is successful, you will find three options-ready made links in text boxes. Choose the third (that starts with [img] tag) and post it here.

icon_smile.gif Good luck!
