ans is decreased estrogen !
A lack of oestrogen can cause irregularities in the body's cooling system. Hot flushes: a sudden unpleasant sensation of burning heat spreading across the face, neck and chest, can occur. Some women experience one or two flushes a week, whilst others can have ten or more a day but generally, the number of hot flushes will decrease over time.

are mani the quetion has now become confused !
according to akanksha ........H-15(Pg.2159)........says that the cause of
hot flushes in menopause is uncertain.......there may b a close association
between hot flushes & LH level........BUT IT ALSO STATES THAT
SYMPTOMS WITH H.FLUSHES MAY OR MAY NOT B CAUSED BY ESTROGEN !
ALSO ON PAGE 2167...HARRI STATES THAT THE MAIN BENIFIT OF
ESTROGEN THERAPY IN MENOPAUSE IS RELIEF OF HOT FLUSHES &
ATROPHY OF UROGENITAL EPITHELIUM & SKIN !
One site on google search says its estrogen !
sorry yaar, now i m also confused.
hey seniors,rxteam Dr. Kay,Bruno HELP !

explanation from two different sources
1)It seems most probable that symptoms occur because of decreased estrogen or increased gonadotrophin concentrations, which affect brain neurotransmitters controlling the thermoregulatory set-point located in the anterior hypothalamus. Exactly how the changes in hormone levels affect neurotransmitters, and whether this is a direct effect or an indirect one - e.g. through norepinephrine hyperactivity - is unknown, to date. Serotonin may play an important role; a change in the balance between two serotonin receptors - 5HT2a and 5HT1a - has been shown in animal models to induce a vasomotor response to hot or cold stimuli, in order to restore the temperature status (health&age)
2) Most menopausal women go through episodes of suddenly feeling hot and then breaking out in a chilling sweat. Hot flushes can occur many times throughout the day. All normal people can develop hot flushes when they have a fever because hot blood circulates through the brain to cause special temperature receptors in the brain to signal the body that it is too hot. Then the brain sends signals along nerves to open blood vessels in the skin, increasing the flow of hot blood to the skin and causing a sensation of heat in the skin. Then the brain tells the sweat glands to pour out sweat, which covers and wets the skin and then evaporates to cool the body
In normal heathy people, and in women with estrogen, this usually happens only when the body temperature rise very high, usually at greater than 101 degrees Fahrenheit. The brain has docking sites that estrogen can attach to and affect brain function. However, when a women lacks estrogen, the hypothalamus in her brain goes haywire. It thinks that every time her temperature rises, that she has a fever and it uses its opening of blood vessels in the skin and sweating to cool her down. This is fine for a sick person with a fever, but when it happens to a healthy person, it can make her miserable
Every healthy person has a normal circadian rhythm for temperature. Your temperature is lowest in the early morning and highest in the early evening. So when body temperature rises naturally in the afternoon or evening, a woman lacking estrogen reacts as if she has a fever.
ref:Estrogen raises the sweating threshold in postmenopausal women with hot flashes. Fertility and Sterility, 2002, Vol 77, Iss 3, pp 487-490. RR Freedman, CM Blacker. Freedman RR, Mott Ctr Human Growth & Dev, 275 E Hancock St, Detroit,MI 48201 USA.
****BUT WHY ONLY MENOPAUSAL WOMEN? EVEN MEN AND YOUNG GIRLS HAVE LOW OESTROGEN LEVELS, WHY DON'T THEY GET FLUSHES? 8)
The flushes occur due to withdrawal of estrogen and not due to low estrogen. Priming with oestrogen (or for that matter any substance) is an essential prerequisite for withdrawal effects. In this case an oestrogen milieu has to have been present and then withdrawn before symptoms like flushing occur
