Carey Franklin Coombs, 1879-1932, was a physician at the Bristol General Hospital. He made important studies of rheumatic fever describing the diastolic murmur of acute rheumatic mitral valvulitis, which bears his name.
The murmur itself is due to vegetations on the mitral valve which is due to vavulitis but the name itself is given to mid diastolic murmur in the absence of MS in Rheumatic heart disease occuring due to mitral valvulitis. It appears in acute stage and later it disappears. So in literature at least carey coombs murmur is synonymous to diastolic murmur in rhematic heart disease arising out of valvulitis. By the way can you suggest a disease with mitral valvulitis having diastolic murmur which disappears later other than RHD?
