Funniest thing is ,there isnt any DM in histopathology/cytology which is much needed and can be much more useful practically , considering subjects are in reality vast enuff to have a full 3 year course on them!

Hi Vikkedin; Pharmacology is certainly lucrative if u put ur foot into pharmaceutical industry , it is unconventional work in contrast to what ur rest of colleagues wud be doing ,Other option is academics in pvt colleges.I have my friend as pharmacologist and she had joined only on academics in a dental college gets ruffly around 5lacs/annum , visiting only 8 days per month so only for 96 days in a year.
While Pharmaceutical companies may pave ur way abroad easier to any other branch/company but now the matter here is you shud be clear about priorities...if priority is Financial consolidation , you may get better , faster scope with Pharmac more than Path , but u will have to be compliant about changing cities and companies. In Bombay u may not have to worry about changing city atleast.
In Pathology , i was getting same as my pharmac friend as post MD for same 96 days per year but Pathology is altogether a different story ... dynamics of a pvt practice / or as consultant attachments in multispeciality hospitals vary dramatically from place to place from towns to metro. While pharmac has growth potential for certainly a metro city only .Private practice of Pathology needs a lot of extra-curricular camaraderie which may not be everyones' cup of tea....patience , interpersonnal skills and business skills are key factors ( not needed in pharmac at all... very easy.......).
Acdemics related to Path on UG/PG level are realy enriching and very interesting and in pvt practice work satisfaction comes from Histo and cyto ....missing in Pharmacology ...
Investments are needed in Path , nothing for pharmac......
Pathology wud affix u to one city and Pharmacology may make u roam around so choice of spouse wud be a matter of caution here , u wont want to spoil /inhibit other persons' career and wont want ur either getting inhibited or limited...

so u know it is preferiing one set of postives and negatives from other set...
Go by ur own hunches, temprament and ur subjectives preferences....

Good luck

One thing i missed here is ur question about money question in Pathology
Harsh but truth is Gone are the days when we used to attach money prospects solely with Branch , post MD opera works exactly like corporate sector in each branch , you need business skills , good contacts , good conviction-conception , good planning , readiness to make strategies and counter-strategies.
If u think like our most of the parent-generation did and had..got a job and life was smooth sailing with every month getting some fixed thing in lap ; u wont find that anywhere now.
I did Pathology and earned better than Gynaecologists /Radiologists of my batch but again not all pathologists of my batch cud do that. I hail from business family , probably that helped me a bit ......
Bottomline is it not ur branch , your success lies in .."Combination of You and Your Branch". Give an extra attention to what you wud enjoy doing ...it wud facilitate walking an extra mile without wearing off in whatever u do......Very important.

hi again..as expected ur advice seems to be quite upto the mark..thanks a lot for the info..not that i've made a decision but i will make it soon n quite CONFIDENTLY icon_smile.gif rightly said by u -in todays world its how u market urself more than ur ability that will earn u money n stability..i've seen worthless fellas makin it large on account of their business strategy..that propelled me towards pharmac..if eventually i've gotta do business y not from the start ! n with the hindrances associated with pursuin a medical career like bond, endless work as a resident n being paid peanuts for that, late marriage, settlement, any idiot comes n beats u,etc ,etc it just seems that India doesnt seem to have any respect for this profession anymore..its killin the love with which we had chosen this field ; to the extent that i was in a fix earlier this year if i should go for MBA ..
As a UG i didnt hv any idea how a pathologist exactly works ,i mean leads his /her life..i'd made up my mind for pharmc for reasons mentioned earlier..the only thing which keeps me thinkin about patho is the fact that Robbins is the only book which i read willingly ! maybe 'coz the book itself is a piece of beauty..rest of the subjects were just for the sake of it ..in fact i hate pharmac..its just so dry icon_smile.gif but not to forget it offers early financial stability which in my regard ,to tell u,is a priority..so tryin to balance my decision evenly n justifiably so that i dont hv to question it in future ..im not a frustrated medico as i might occur to a few icon_smile.gif ,just a thinkin medico ..i will keep in touch with u for any advice in future..thanks again..
by the way u pretty resemble the lady in the picture ,Ash, in the way u talk-oriented n clear !! take it as a compliment icon_smile.gif thanks again...

See benefits of patho--

1. before any surgery pathologists have to b consulted bout blood, urine, enzymes, serum electrolytes....n so on

2. histopatho has a bright future as cancers have become common

3. then in medicine side-- various examinations as malaria slide, TLC DLC ..n on n on

4. i.e doctors of any field needs u- be it surgeon, orthopedician, paediatrician, ophthalmologist, dentist, Obs -Gynae , .........

5. see charges of pathologist-very high.

so dont wonder if the RICHEST DOCTORS ARE PATHOLOGISTS in ur town.

hello Dr.XP,
sorry for the late reply..agreed,pathologists can earn a lot,or say maximum..but one cant deny that its a dependent branch n most of the moolah comes from havin good contacts with the docs..we hv to lick docs feet to succeed in a pharmaceutical industry too;in that sense even that's a dependent branch..but here its a group of guys workin together unlike patho where everythin narrows down to an individual......still no matter what field i opt for ,patho will always be my favourite subject..i really dont understand the psyche of guys who opt for Anaesthesia , radio, orthopaedics ...how can one develop interest in these fields where we actually dont hv any first hand experience..most of us toh bunk Anaesthesia to get time for entrance prep..needless to say very few medicos really opt for what they like ;n few here implies a rare species icon_smile.gif ..it seems our likes change with our rank icon_smile.gif first 300 are interested in radio orthopaedics n med or paeds.next bunch of 500 focusses on surg, ansthsia pharmc n so on later all follow..females tend to 'LIKE' obgy, anestsia n patho..males pray for some independent branch so that gettin a spouse with a dependent branch gets easier..its a rarity that a male pathologist gets a spouse with a clinical field.. chalo then ......i guess im gettin unnecessarily carried away..no offence meant..iv mentioned just what iv observed....SIYAA,would u like to comment on this??
