ocular manifestations of diphteria occur in 3 stages

stage of infiltration:
scanty conjunctival discharge
pain
hard nd swollen lids
conjunctival congestion
thick grey- yellow membrane covers the conjunctiva
membrane bleeds on removing

stage of suppuration:
pain decreases
lids become soft
copious purulent discharge

Pseudomembranous conjunctivitis also caused by corynebacterium diphtheriae shows a similar membrane formation on the palpebral conjunctiva and fornices ...... but does not bleed on removing.
