I am very sad that some people think Community Medicine (CM) is such a bad field. It is not so. I have done MD in CM few years back. Now I am working with a reputed medical college in India. I have also worked as foreign expert for CM in Foreign Universities. There are too many good options in this field. Working with WHO is ambition of many people in my branch but WHO is not the only agency . There are many agencies working in field of public health. As far as getting a job in India it is very easy. People will run after you to offer you a highly paid job. The only thing is you should have good contacts. If you want to work abroad just keep in touch with the latest advertisements in leading national dalies. So if you get MD in CM go for it. It is my true advice.

MD in CM is good in almost all colleges. But it depends more on your input during your PG. You have to work very hard perticularly in Rural areas and understand the health problems being faced by the community. As well you have to choose a topic of your intrest for your thesis. Try to find a college where there is lot of community oriented practical work going on. To get a job with international agencies first you should have experience in this field. Just doing MD doesn't mean you know every thing . you have to work with senior persons and learn as much as possible. If you want to work in academic field you can join as lecturer/ senior registrar in any college and there you can percieve your work.

Congrats to Drhealth on your success! I agree with you about the prospects of PSM .....more importantly it gives me a diversity in knowledge, experience which is immensely satisfying...out of wide range of sub-areas, one could select the place of his aptitude, knack and interest...be it academia, operation or research

Dear skanthreddy,
Jobs and payscales in PSM depends on nature of the job, organization/institute, level of the job position, level of academic and professional credential etc.... ...is it operational or research or mix of both or purely academia?....is it with national NGO or INGO or UN agencies or the National government agencies?.....I dont know specifically in India, but in the Subcontinent countries, this would be more or less the same.In Bangladesh, for the same level position, payscale is....Government<National NGO<INGO<UN....depending on the abovementioned factors payscale ranges approxmately from $1800 to $180000 pa in Bangladesh.
