osteochondroma is the commonest benign tumour of bone...

it transforms to chondrosarcoma so ur doubt is can it be called as benign ....well... since many books give this as the answer we can safely take it as an answer

i opt for osteochondroma.....11% of all benign tumours! i wud opt for it!

The answer to that as you have all concluded is indeed Osteochondroma.
Ref: Campbell's textbook of Operative Orthopaedics,Turek's textbook of orthopaedics.

Some other common tumors are:
Most common benign leison of bone: Fibrous Cortical defect.
Ref: Appley's textbook of orthopaedics.
Most common neoplasm: Lipoma.
Most common malignant bone tumour: Myeloma.
Ref: Turek's textbook of oethopaedics.

Hi drpsg,

I do not see what is the confusion!

Maheshwari says: "Osteochondroma is the commonest benign tomour of the bone. Though it is not a true neoplasm."

So the answer to your question is OSTEOCHONDROMA.

Reasons:
1. Even Maheshwari accepts that the Osteochondromas are the commonest tumour.
2. If the Osteochondromas are not taken into consideration then the Osteois Osteomas become the commonest tumours.
3. For all practical perposes in all accepted postgraduate textbooks of orthopaedics like Campbell and Turek osteochondroma is still considered a tumour and therefore it still stays in henumber one position.
4. Unless until specified I believe you should write Osteochondroma as the most common benign bone tumour. If the question eliminates Osteochondromas by making a refernce to the true nature of the tumor tehn maybe you can write Osteoid Osteoma as your answer.

the ques is asking about benign tumour and osteochondroma is the commonest benign tumour when all true and false tumours r taken into consideration if specifically asked abt true benign tumour then osteoid osteoma osteochondroma is not a true tumour as its growth stops with the growth of epiphyseal plate
