TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ SUNDAY, JANUARY 04, 2004 11:03:42 PM ]
HYDERABAD : If you ask any student which foreign country he would love to study in -- the US or the UK , the first choice will still be the Land of Opportunities .
Reason: Placement opportunities are better and courses are relatively cheaper than they are in European countries. And, yes scholarships are easier to get.
"More than 90 per cent of AP students prefer to pursue their higher studies in the US , considering the flexibility of fee packages and the employment opportunities that come with these," Osmania University Foreign Relations Office director Prof Veera Reddy Kadaru says.
Barely, 10 per cent head for the UK , to Canada
, or even New Zealand
and Australia
, he says. Though Australia
has been doing a lot to encourage Indians students to study in universities Down Under and is even offering placement opportunities, the idea of getting a degree from Monash University or Latrobe is yet to catch on here.
The big advantage of studying in the US is that most people have relatives and friends there. Cities there are reasonably more familiar than say Montreal or Adelaide . So, the rush for the US , he explains.
Besides, students from any stream -- be it psychology or philosophy -- have a handsome chance of getting employment in the US , unlike in some other countries.
P J Praveen is a case in point. He studied medicine at the Osmania Medical College . He had the chance to choose between the US and the UK , but opted for an MS course at the Texas University . He says the fact that he has relatives in America tipped the scales.
"Somehow, you don't feel like an alien in the US ," says T Smita, who did her higher studies in the US . "You invariably end up having a relative or a friend there, with whom you can share your concerns."
"Backed by a booming economy, and a technology sector that's highly advanced, placement services are on a roll in the US , so naturally an engineering student would prefer the US as a destination for continuing further studies or research," Osmania University head of the department of engineering and Entrepreneurship Development Cell director Prof TA Janardhan Reddy says. Language isn't a barrier. And the familiarity factor is high.
Turn to Germany . Though education is free in that country and Indians are encouraged, the language barrier is formidable, Reddy adds. For instance, from the Osmania University College of Engineering alone, of the 60 students who pass out every year, about 30 leave for the US and 50 per cent of them get scholarships, he says.
For infographic:
In 1991-92, AP topped the charts with the largest number of students crossing over to foreign countries. It sent 1,998 students.
Tamil Nadu came second with 1,128 students.
Maharashtra
came third with 965 students.
There has been a constant increase in the number of students from AP opting for higher studies abroad. This is brought out by the number of student visas issued.
The United Kingdom -- visas have increased from 480 in 1995 to 4,517 in 2002.
British High Commission says the number of visas issued in 2002 was 64 per cent higher than those issued in 2001.
Till June, 2003 the British High Commission had cleared 1,534 applicants from south India .
