i know people who have done OBG , surgery , orthopedics & radiology ( not residency though , a fellowship in both of these) and anaesthesia ( myself ) , apart from int med ,psych , family practice.

thats a lot of options. not just 2.

@dmaster.. U can do fellowship in medicine subspeciality like cardio, neuro etc without residancy.. Bt for practice there u hav to board certificate in cardio, neuro etc.. N for dis u hav to board certify in internal med. First... So u hav to do residancy first...
some fellowship in radiology dont require residancy...but u hav to md radio in india first...icon_smile.gif

agree with dratlulsingh- you need residency before beginning your practice there.

@sowkat Hi there. Ophthal in the US is very difficult to get but certainly not impossible. I know one of my seniors who got ophthal in northwestern university in chicago. But this guy did 3 years of solid research there before getting it, and his MLE scores were great. If you are genuinely interested then you can do it but there are no guarantees. and simply taking your MLE exam and acing them may still not get you a seat.

Aim USMLE Step 2 CS

Ophthal in US is possible like radiodiagnosis in AIIMS is possible, if you know what I mean.

hi all...i have taken md micro this year thru my state pg....if i wanna work in US as a microbiologist after i finish my md here, how shall i proceed??do i need to give usmle??wats the scope of microbiology in US??some1 please guide....

livensmile
Aim USMLE Step 1

Well not hundred percent sure, but from what i have come across, there are only few neurosurgery programmes which accept people for fellowships,

It depends on the programme, but mostly EVERYONE N I MEAN EVERYONE needs to go through the boards (BOARD certified) to practise in the Us.

However your pg counts and you are preferred over other canidates.
sorry but try finding people like ashb from this forum or digitaldoc( twitt or usmletomd ) search on goog to get more information

for all beginners please search googl yutube
acing the usmle find videos it would clear most of doubts, buy his book if you want its from jaypea publications..to get insight of all specialities .

hope i could help.

Firstly, Eletives are not tough to get but electives in surgery is tough. Hard Core surgery is tough. But sub specialties are not difficult. Try electives in cardio thoracic surgery or Hepato biliary surgery. It is not unheard off.

Secondly if you don't get electives through this route on your own then spend some bucks and apply through Americlerkships who offer electives or rotational externships.

I know four friends of mine who have got Surgery in the United states. But I do not know anyone with Ortho or Anesthesia. Ent also i know.

So chill out and make sure you get your paper work done and get the ball rolling because paper work takes a lot of time.. icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks a Lot Hugepuppy for ur advice.......ur right paperwork takes a awful lot of time...took me a month to complete formalities......now i m done and gonna mail in a day or two......Regarding Americlerkships i ve heard that electives done through them do not carry any weight because During Interviews ,they know that these colleges ( which americlerkship offers ) take students NOT on Merit But Money.....but it is my last choice ....now m waiting for positive reply !!! fingers crossed

Have you really met people with MD OBG in India getting Fellowship in USA? Can you give more info on this, like which university, which subspeciality, eligibility requirements, cost involved, etc or contacts of such people?

Of course your medical college wont pay... You get all the documents in order and then get it signed and sealed by your medical college and then send it in a college envelope.

It is not unheard off. I know a guy (check usmletomd) who actually got ENT residency post MS from india. If i am not wrong he got it in New york.

Keep up the hopes and have faith and work hard.

You can get a fellowship in Respiratory medicine but it needs you to finish your steps before you apply. I personally feel you should first concentrate on getting articles out... Own paper publications in our institution... Get it accepted in conferences like NAPCON, BRONCOCON, Asia pacific conference, ACCP and ATS conferences. If it happens (in a few, if not all) then it will boost your chances.

For instance, On September 9th, 2011 there is an interventional pulmonary conference in Bangalore with hands on experience on simulators. You should also try simulator program offered by ACCP at their centre in the USA.

These are the things which the US people are looking for. I am pretty sure you would have had a crack at NAPCON and BRONCOCON. If not, then the deadlines are not yet over for this year... Do apply with some meaningful research..

Cheers icon_biggrin.gif

Radiology guys are lucky..... They need to just finish their steps and then apply for a fellowship directly through the fellowhip matching program done by the ERAS itself. Once you get interviews, you can attend them and then get matched... You can practice using the fellowship in the US unlike other subjects where you can not practice without the residency...

Except radiology all other subjects follow the same route. You need to finish your steps and then apply for a residency if you want to practice in the United States of America. If you are ok in just doing a fellowship and getting back to India then you need to finish your steps and apply for fellowships through the fellowship match.

Kindly go through the Cleveland Clinic website. They have courses and work happening in the field of gynaecology Endoscopic Oncosurgery, Infertility and other stuff.. Couple of distant relatives of mine did fellowships there and they are practicing here.

Unfortunately for one, who had to go back to us to be with her husband, she went through the whole process of residency in OBGyn after fellowship completion....

Thank you so much Hugepuppies for your kind reply..I went through their website..it appeared quite exciting, but they do not fund the candidate's 1 year stay in the US. Are all fellowship programs like that for overseas trainees? I was more interested in funded or stipendary positions. Any idea where they may be available?

Na... If you finish your steps and get a fellowship with them, then you are paid some money varying from 5000 - 6000$ per month.. That is more than enough to maintain your expenses and rent a house and ur food and save some money unless you spend extravagantly....

You need to go through the same route of USMLE steps and then matching process. I am not here to discourage you but ophthalmology is really tough to get into... The entry into ophthalmology for International Medical Graduates is less than 2% of the total slots available.

All the best in your endeavors...
