Unfair Deal for Doctors
The number of doctors taking PLAB test has steadily increased over last few
years, since there is a perception that UK needs large number of doctors. Last
year about 3000 doctors passed the test. Majority of them come from Indian
Subcontinent. Each of these doctors spends a large sum of money to travel
to UK, pay the GMC fees and attend courses. Having then passed the exam
one would expect that the doctor- starved NHS will welcome them with open
arms!
However unfortunately the truth is that these doctors suffer several months
struggle even to find a clinical attachment while few lucky ones will obtain a
job. Each of them has to write hundreds of applications for clinical
attachments/jobs. During this time most are out of pocket and some are
running in debts. They are forced to live in substandard accommodation and
some have to find manual jobs.
The Immigration office is severe on those who do not find a job and these
may be forced to leave the country! There does not seem to be any
coordination between GMC, Home Office, DOH and COPMeD.
What a shame that this pool of young, enthusiastic doctors instead of being
nurtured and looked after to be
future workforce for NHS, are allowed to get demoralised and depressed.
We suggest that GMC should give a realistic picture of job situation in UK to
people overseas before they decide to take the PLAB Test. The DOH should
set up a centralised mechanism to assist these doctors in obtaining a clinical
attachment. They should be given free accommodation and an honorarium
while they are trained and mentored to take up responsibilities of NHS. The
home office should give them at least one year’s visa. This future workforce
for NHS deserves better treatment!

The no of doctors taking PLAB part 2 is now 10,000 per year.
And dear palaash if the NHS were to give free accomodation and honorarium..... And the home office a years visa....
The PLAB seats would have a waiting list of more than a year compared to the present few months!

I guess the GMC should give a clear picture to the ones taking their exams....
And each NHS trust and Deanery should publish the no of training/non training positions in every speciality along wiht the no of UK medical graduates & overseas and no of applications recieved for each post etc....
Only then can some one say exactly where the shortages and where the excesses are.
