whoever told u should see the match list of NRMP last year based on individual branches... It is not very very very easy but it is certainly not tough to get into OBGyn
@ hugepuppy
i heard that gettin surgery in USA is difficult( literally not possible),,,
is that true???
not impossible... you need to have EXTRA ORDINARY profile for surgery. (if you are IMG)
ive seen two people getting surgery, but they got it after they did 3-4 years of solid research in US.
im not saying that 3-4 years of research is mandatory... but it surely shows the kind of profile you need to get into surgery...!! its very very very competetive...!!
psychiatry, pediatrics, family medicine, internal medicine are grabbed by IMGs easily as compared to other branches.

I second what usmle videos is telling...
But I have an IMG friend who got into surgery (categorical) with scores of 85 and 99 in step 1n 2ck respectively. Secondly he had done research in India and got a couple of publications in a surgical journal. It is improbable but not impossible..

mean score for IMGs who got surgery:
step 1: 223
step 2: 227
only 9 people matched out of 64 who were interviewd, with step 1 scores bet 181-190. dats just 14% result. these data are for those who were called for interview, if we actually include all the candidates who applied for the match and did not get interview, the results will be terrible.
they (who got matched with such low scores) surely must be having all round profile.
lets take a look at step 2 scores:
only 7 out of 46 people who were interviewed with scores bet 181-190 were matched.
again,
these data are for those who were called for interview, if we actually include all the candidates who applied for the match and did not get interview, the results will be terrible.
i hope i am clear, not to discourage anyone... getting surgery is difficult and not impossible.
you all must be knowing why branches like surgery, radiology, anaesthesiology are hard to get into for IMGs... its coz they are HIGHEST paid braches... and most of the US medical students get into debts to the tune of 200,000-300,000$$ by the time they complete their medical school... so they choose HIGHEST paid branches to pay out their debts sooner.
and this very fact makes branches like surgery, radiology, anaesthesiology are hard to get into for IMGs... its NOT IMPOSSIBLE though.

I totally agree with you usmlevideos... But it is not unheard off is what i meant... I am glad to see these statistics coming up on RXPG bcoz i always thought that rxpg had lesser number of ppl doing usmle and posting in it...
It is really competitive to get into surgery especially for an IMG.. But, sometimes we do get interviews.. On usmle to md, there is an IMG who has matched into Otorhinolaryngology...
