Quick Scroll FAQ: What is the Job situation based on Nationality? 01.02.04 (4 years ago) #1

hi to all the post PLAB people.
im depressed like the most people after the plab2 are.
The job situation is really not good.
We have to face so many difficulties. There are a few of them.
1)It has become extremely difficult even to get a clinical attachment due to saturation of doctors and some hospitals even dont accept any attchments. I tried for 2 months and atleast in 30 hospitals and finally got an attachment. But this is just attchment , not a job.
2)The system of applying for jobs is not fair. Everybody has to apply for every job.So the result is that u get a 1000 odd applications for 1 post. And ur chances get so bleak to get shortlisted. Why cant we have a central matching system for the jobs of doctors as that in America.
3)By law it is not possible to give a work permit to a doctor if an EEA doctor is available for that post, so the chances of asian doctors get so slim. Virtually we people are left with a few non training posts where all PLAB doctors are competing, so it gets very tough for us.
I just hope for the best and wish good luck to all the doctors.

Are you sure that EEA doctors get jobs in preference to Asian doctors? To the best of my knowledge, there is no such preference at the SHO level. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

At SpR level, there are 2 types of numbers. 1. National training number for Brits and the like, 2. Visting training number for Asians etc.

Specific laws realting to recruiting British nationals over foreigners comes into play only at consultant level and all of us have a long way before, if ever, we reach that far.

Comments invited.

I don't agree with the opinion that system of applying is not fair. I think it is just the opposite - there is open competition and you cannot get a job just because you happen to be a consultant's nephew. And I don't understand why do you have to apply for every job advertised? Surely you'd apply for the ones that interest you. I sent 7 applications in total.

Yup im sure.
work permit is only given by a hospital if an EEA national person is not available for that job. It is for all jobs, not necessarily for doctors but for every profession.
Well about applying for all the posts, I meant to say was that u have to apply for each post of ur choice seperately. Its a lot of pain taking process. Have a look at residency match system in other countries and then decide which system is better.
