Due to some recent changes in the rules, an overseas doctor in UK can apply to become a GP trainee immediately after passing the PLAB test. RxPG site will release a series of articles for the next few days regarding the GP training in UK. I am starting this new threads inviting users to asl questions here about it. , i came to uk 2 years ago and have worked here for almost 1 and half years, and have been aplying for GP training jobs,BUT ALAS DESPITE EXPERIENCE AND EVEN MRCP -1 NO SHORTLISTINGS, FRIENDS DONT BELIVE AND ROUMORS GP JOBS ARE VERY DIFFICULT TO GET NOE OF MY 15 FRIENDS ALL WITH LOCAL EXPERIENCE WHO R APPLYING FOR JOBS HAVE GOT INTO GP TRAINING,
TO BE SHORT AND QUICK, NO MORE JOBS ON OFFER IN UK, FOR GET PLAB CONSIDER SOMETHING ELSE, THIS IS MY SINCERE ADVICE DONT GET ME WRONG. SOORY

Hi all, just to say that for those of you already working here,dont lose heart. I started on the Neath Port Talbot VTS in Wales this Augsut, and four out of six doctors are overseas trained (I was born in Bangladesh but I trained here in the UK as I have been living here for the last 21 years). However other than one other local graduate, everyone else managed to secure a place despite overseas qualifications. Tere are two doctors from India, one from Spain and one other (I am not sure where she is from). The Wales GP training scheme has no interviews - once shortlistedm all candidates attend an assessment centre and do four exams - a written MCQ / EMQ, a simulated patient consultation, a group exercise, and a written (short essay style) paper. The whole thing lasts from 9am to 4pm, and the places are awarded according to score. Although it is a long day, it is a fair system and those who have recently done PLAB are at an advantage in the exam as the questions are similar. If anyone wants any advice, please leave a note and I will be happy to help if I can.

Hi friendly,

My advice was mainly for doctors already working in the UK. It is very difficult to get shortlisted (and even then it is hard) without UK experience. If you have still not come to the UK, I would suggest you read the many threads on the forums here, and have a look at the recent BBC documentary. Competition is very high at the moment, and only getting higher as more and more people are passing PLAB . and more UK doctors are qualifying every year than the year before.

Think carefully about what you have to leave behind to come to the UK - your friends and family, and maybe a good job there (or at least a job). The situation is bad for finding any jobs for those that do not already have some good NHS experience. At the same time, there are some success stories (my house officer when I was a locum SHO in orthopaedics was from India, and got a job within weeks, he had only done PRHO jobs in India, and now he is in a one year Psych job and applying for GP VTS in the next round)

Living conditions are very poor, and it is expensive to live here, especially without a job. If coming here would involve borrowing money or geting your family to sacrifice business or quality of living to give you a chance at a UK career, I would say that it is not worth the risk.

I am a software engineer and my Fiancé is doing her internship after MBBS. By Aug 05 she will be over with it. In the mean time she is planning to appear for PLAB -1 in JAN-FEB 05.
I have an opportunity to come to Europe for an year say from March 05 to 06. She is planning to go for PLAB 2 in may - June when I’ll be there to support her. Then she has in her mind that after completion of internship in Aug 05, she’ll come there and settle there.
Can anyone please guide me if she ll be able to find some suitable place in the time Ill be there (Oct 05 – Feb 06). So, is there any use of planning for PLAB in this way. What is the probability of her settling there in the time frame.
Because the same opportunity can be converted into US also for me so will it be more suitable for her to go for USMLE ? Will that be more viable or that is even worse

It's not that easy to settle here as a doc. USMLE has greater job prospects than PLAB definitely. The only problem is of visa in us, and ofcourse mle is tougher than PLAB . I shall advice u to settle ur family in ur home country,where both of u can work and earn and live a happy life. Orelse,ur wife'll get frustrated if she remains jobless....which is very natural as we doctors devote maximum portion of our lives in our studies...and if our knowledge and endeavours prove futile,dejection is but obvious.Both of u come to uk,enjoy life here for an year and go back to ur country to spend ideal family life there.

, As i already mentioned that the my chance could be converted to US also, so can some body tell me if the option (US) for her would be better? As in India also, the chances of a MBBS getting a preferred seat in MD is a Herculean task. Better try than lose without attempt.

So, please tell me which efforts can yield better results in the given time frame

efforts in searching job through MLE in US

or efforts after PLAB in UK? Already the advantage of ease of visa in PLAB is there with her. But in US also she can be there on dependent visa and search out and when she gets something in hand, can appeal for visa conversion !
