Dubai's doctor training regime

A postgraduate training programme for doctors in the region is being established by Harvard Medical International (HMI) and the Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC).
The programme aims to advance careers of specialists and scientists who constitute the intellectual resources of the region.
Speaking to Gulf
News, Dr Robert K. Crone, President of International Programmes Clinical, said: "To initiate this effort, the first phase focuses on training specialists through clinical and research fellowships and short-term observerships at the Harvard teaching hospitals in Boston."
According to him, most clinical and research fellowship programmes are for one to three years beginning July 1, unless otherwise indicated. While most observerships are for one to three months, and start times can be flexible depending on trainee and mentor availability.
Dr Crone said the programme will ultimately be based in DHCC, and will offer clinical and research fellowships and speciality observerships. It will also enable each trainee to hold a concurrent appointment at Harvard Medical School as well as affiliated hospitals or institutions.
"Currently, we are going to send these trainees abroad to HMI in the US, but once DHCC is ready, we are going to hold these programmes here in Dubai," he added. "At the conclusion of the programme, participants will receive certificates from HMI and from the Harvard teaching hospital."
HMI will offer three types of training at the various Harvard associated hospitals in Boston and potentially other internationally renowned medical centres with which HMI has educational relationships.
"Training pathways include clinical fellowships, research fellowships, and observerships," he said.
In general, all programmes are designed to provide the most comprehensive educational experience by developing the trainee's clinical skills and expertise in a specific area of clinical investigation.
"It is anticipated that such training will prepare trainees for productive careers in academic medicine within their specialty of interest," Dr Crone said.
He said that a major strength of these fellowships is that they are flexible enough to develop a structured experience, tailored to the specific educational needs of the qualified applicant.
Candidates must meet Harvard requirements
Course contents: The fellowships are on non-invasive cardiovascular imaging; stroke; gastroenterology; maternal foetal medicine; orthopaedic trauma; retina; anterior segment; sleep medicine and obstetric Anaesthesia
.
Minimum requirements for clinical fellowships: Applicants who are graduates of non-US medical schools (except Canada
) must be certified by the Educational Council for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). They must have a TOEFL
score of 600 or above or have graduated from an English speaking medical school or residency programme and must have completed an internship, residency, or pertinent training.
Minimum requirements for observership: Candidates for research fellowships/observership candidates must have a TOEFL
score of 550 or above or graduation from an English speaking medical school or residency programme and must have completed requisite training in the relevant speciality.
Recruitment: Interviews in person, via telephone or videoconference for those selected from the pool of applicants will be held this month.

training posts are almost impossible to obtain for indians residing here , so u can imagin ethe situation for ones not residing. if u seek a job its a another situation but training posts are given to uae nationals and ppl who have studied medicine here.

Dubai Training Posts

I am an Indian who was brought up in Dubai. I did my schooling here & joined Medical School here. Since all of you wanted to know about training posts here. The truth is anyone who graduated from Dubai Medical College was easily given Residency in Dept. Of Health but it was stopped for all expatriates 4 years ago. This year the Director General felt the need to take expats & therefore we were called for interviews. Of the 144 applicants, 44 were called for interviews & 34 were finally selected.
They have decided to make it a biannual intake with the next one scheduled in sep 2006 & applications have to be submitted electronically between 11june-22july 2006. The first choice is graduates of Dubai Medical College, second: people who did internship here, then others from outside & preferance given to those with some Pg qualifications.
As for Harvard Medical School for PG it will start to function only in 3 years time. But till then they will conduct some CME courses & seminars.
For info on what is MOH & DOH: Well though UAE is a very small country we have three different health ministries functioning in UAE. First is the MOH which is Ministry of Health, if you pass this exam you can only work in the 5 northern emirates not in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
For working in Dubai you need to pass the DOH which is Department of Health.
To work in Abu Dhabi there is the General Authority of Health Exam. But GAH prefer doctors with American & Canadian qualification.
Hope this answers yours queries. For any further help please feel free to ask.
