PGI chief’s final word: End political interference
C. Shamsher
Chandigarh, March 30: THE institutes are much bigger than the individuals, and we should do our best to maintain their dignity. So said Prof S.K. Sharma, Director PGI, while speaking to Newsline in an exclusive interview a day before his superannuation.
When asked if he had faced any political interference during his tenure as director, he admitted that there had been many instances, but did not go into the specifics. “Since the best compete for top positions at institutes such as PGI and AIIMS
, political lobbying is bound to happen,” he remarked. But things should change and there should not be any political interference.’’ He said that the PGI is a centre of excellence and technical people working in the institute should be given a free hand.
On whether there is any political interference in the appointment of Dean or Director — which are hot seats of the institutes — he said that the appointment to the office of the Dean should be made purely on the basis of seniority and suitability, while the selection of the Director is open, and for it, applications are invited from all over the country.
Prof Sharma said he was satisfied with his professional career. He started as a lecturer in 1975 in PGI and later became an assistant professor and then the professor of Urology before becoming the Director of PGI.
Recalling the low points in his career, he said,‘‘The recent controversy, whereby, I was trapped by some of the ‘conspirators’ was the only low point. But I am thankful to the judicial system.’’
Speaking on a personal note, he said after retirement he would get attached to one of the private hospitals and continue to do what he is best at as a urologist — surgeries.
About PGI, he said, there are lot of unfinished projects of the ninth and the tenth plan which he would like to see. ‘‘Some of the projects got delayed due to certain vested interests. I hope those would be completed soon.’’
