Debate: Why doctors become overseas nurses?

Full Article:
By Atenodoro R. Ruiz, M.D.
| Quote: |
| THE issue of our local doctors taking up nursing to become registered nurses abroad, specifically in the United States, has been the subject of several newspaper articles. National dailies reported that a recent medical board topnotcher, Dr. Emil Reyes Jacinto, had decided to become a nurse abroad instead of pursuing his medical career in the Philippines. One of the daily newspapers waas even quick to criticize him as a “sell-out” in their editorial. If only prevailing conditions (could) provide respectable pay, recognition of hard work, with the national government fostering assistance and support for our struggling colleagues, then we would not be pondering on this issue. Knowing why our colleagues left our shores should unite the medical profession, and for our national government to prioritize health and health professionals. Only then can we slow, if not stop, this hemorrhage and exodus of physicians to foreign shores. |

this is a very sad plight of the the philippine health system...more and more doctors take up nursing each year. some of them are even the creme of the crop. sadly,it's up to the individual person to decide. each of us has his own choice on how to live life. we should not judge people who downgrade themselves.

It's not for us to judge these doctor turned nurses. I have been working with some doctors who are now either nursing board certified or in training. Most of them are already accomplished in their chosen fields - not just consultants but even department head! They all have different perspectives but with the same goal - to get out! And each has their reasons for wanting out, of which one cannot blame them for.
It's sad but it's happening. It's their dream and we cannot fault them if they want something better than what they have or could have here.
Let's just hope that when all these dreamers are already successful abroad, would come back home and start to share their blessings with Pinoys! Until then let's keep our fingers crossed (but don't hold ur breath though...)

some time i also think of such things,as the responsibility for them is not at all
as the medical and criminal negligence cases are increasing in our country violence against doctors increasing in country pay for doctors in govt set up is less
so it is not unwise decision

Maybe it is because of the tough competition of the job market in terms of availablility of the medical personnel abroad.

And maybe it is due to other factors like different qualification requirements and other factors of eligibility in terms of the context of overseas medical field.

hello all
well i hav gone thru this thread for first time
i quote here"the fault is not in our stars, but in ourselves that we are the underlings"
we hav ourselves let us down an forgotten our past
its not the factors like govt lackness, its not low wages in our countries, its not respect that a doctor has while he is abroad, its just we an us ourselves who hav forgotten
we all neeed to wake up now, coz we all are particles of our sacred land an our country
i wish we all can play role for good of our country

Dear friends,
May be I am not posting, addressing the actual crux of the matter. But I thought i would atleast speak my mind out. I am an Indian doctor who work in the UK.
I have worked hand in hand with nurses from the Philipines. In my opinion they are the Best in the world. Most hardworking, very knowledgable, kind, caring, well behaved and knows how to stand their ground. I have seen on so many occasions them trying to help doctors in making the right decision. In total Excellent.
So nursing or doctor I think whatever the philipino people do. they are very good.
