A tracheostomised patient, with portex tracheostomy tube, in the ward, developed sudden complete blockage of the tube. Which of the following is best next step in the management ?

1. Immediate removal of the tracheostomy tube.
2. Suction of tube with sodium bicarbonate.
3. Suction of tube with saline.
4. Jet ventilation.

this is a Q from May 2004.

Amit Ashish have given the answer as -Immediate removal of the tracheostomy tube
and I agree with them.

Logan turner 10th ed pg 196 mentions,under blockage of tracheostomy tube-

"the tube shld be changed immediately...."'

Also,the other options don't seem right....for this is an emergency and suction with anything will take time and jet ventilation might push the plug deeper.

any differing opinons???
