Primaquine (an antimalarial drug) or other oxidant drugs induce oxidative stress. In G6PDH (glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase) deficiency erythrocytes have paucity of this enzyme.
G6P + G6PDH -----> 6-phosphogluconolactone + NADPH
2NADPH + GSSG ------> 2GSH + 2NADP
They fail to replenish NADPH and GSH (It is main free radical scavenger)-----> red blood cells damage caused by oxidative stress.
